Hyperrealistic Paintings of Ladies Eating Things [NSFW]

17

Lee Price, who graduated from the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia back in 1990, and has studied with another Flavorpill favorite, Alyssa Monks, paints bird’s eye view portraits of both herself and other women — often nude in the tub and surrounded by indulgent treats like grilled cheese sandwiches, Cocoa Puffs, and cupcakes — that look just like photographs. Interesting. But I’ve never gotten the point of painting something so that it looks like a photo. And in this case the subject matter is totally out of left field.

Bra-vo!. Is there anything else a woman can do to better prepare herself for the mean streets? Yummy, ladies.

I love cheetos!

Hey Lee, Wish I could paint like you.

i just don’t get why all these women are skinny, and why they’re eating in the bathroom… I guess this is what bulimia looks like.

@TheGeek… that’s the point. She has impeccable skill, but painting such an absurd subject. I love the juxtaposition.

This is so smart. It is about women’s complex and often guilt-ridden relationship with food. The paintings also speak to pleasure in the form of food. But think on this: Why are they alone when indulging? Why will the most beautiful, slim or even the most average woman show themselves engaging in other pleasures (sex, play, etc) but will often feel self-councious about eating or overindulging in food for pleasure, especially in front of other people?

An obsessive look at obsession? Women’s complex relationship with food… “Chocolate is better than sex.”; “Food comforts me.”; “That cupcake was to die for.” It’s a hidden/forbidden relationship. Do you not see yourself here?

what an accomplishment, what flavors! photo realism (obsessive compulsive painting ie, waste of effort on a false idea of fidelity) misogyny (looking down -literally- on women indulging in secret transgressive gorging, ie ruining themselves, their bodies), invasive peeping/visual rape (women, caught naked or in underwear gobbling garbage while thinking they are alone) sick fantasy, a lie (women magically unaffected by their bad eating habits, ie still kinda cute [never to be confused with beautiful] stretched out in coffin-like tubs, soiledwith junk food) Price probably has a spy cam in the bathroom ceiling like many a creep). It’s hard not to think of Bonnard and the long baths of his wife, who was tortured by skin ailments, baths seen and then re-imagined, painted so beautifully as if to heal her, out of love. think of that and weep. nice pick flavorpill!

Very interesting paintings – and about 1/2 way through I was reminded of the food paintings of Wayne Thiebaud.

Visual rape? Really? You don’t think your rhetoric’s maybe just a *little* overblown?

Pretty sure the artist is female, by the way

what would you call it if someone published your private activities in the toilet? do you prefer ‘voyeurism with an erotic edge’? fine. and I know Lee is female. does that mean she’s immune to self loathing, the most common form of loathing there is? binge eating is all about self loathing. look, a dozen paintings of women spied upon while gorging in toilets is my idea of over blown. but what does it say? what, actually, does ‘realism’ mean? pure seeing, uninflected by thinking? (photo realism means hours of effort and pints of oil color to achieve what a point-and-shoot creates in an instant). and what could hyper-realism possibly mean? the only thing I can think it means is the deliberate elimination of the artists mediation, ie the elimination of the artists eye and mind. look, ma, I’m a skillful as a camera. trompe l’oeil again. what an accomplishment
