It has been an interesting few months in the world of bookends. No, seriously. First, lawyers representing Jeff Koons demanded that San Francisco’s Park Life stop selling bookends that look like balloon dogs. (Luckily for everyone involved, the ridiculous case was later dropped.) Then a man in Deland, Florida almost blew himself up after using a pineapple-style active World War II grenade given to him by a neighbor as a bookend for years. All drama aside, bookends are more than just decorative (and in some cases, dangerous) objects — they’re also pretty darn useful. That’s why after the jump, we’ve rounded up 10 of our favorites for your consideration; let us know in the comments if you’ll be adding any of these to your own bookshelf.

My friend and her sister make some awesome i-beam bookends in Brooklyn. They definitely should be on your list.
See http://shop.katchdesigncompany.com/product/supreme-beam-accessory for info on the Supreme Beam and their other design projects.
I, too, have a set of brass horse-head bookends I inherited from my gradfather; wonderfully heavy and they don’t slowly slide apart if the books shift.
I also have a nice set of heavy glass block bookends I purchased on a tour of the Corning Glassworks 20 years ago.
I also have a and z bookends from chapters.
I have brass Abe Lincoln bookends I got at an antique store in Pennsylvania. That is as exotic as I get. I love the goldfish ones.
