Mark E. Smith
The Fall’s main man has made a career out of being a curmudgeon who doesn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks – he does his own thing, and doing so is all he cares about, and he’s exactly the same now as he was when The Fall first emerged 30 or so years ago. It seems to us that this is pretty much the definition of cool, so it makes sense that the older and more curmudgeonly he gets, the less of a fuck he gives, and the cooler he gets.

OMG! Compay Segundo … my sexy hero. I was in a small shop on the Island of Santa Lucia when the radio announced his death. At some level I always knew it was inevitable, but it still stung. My favorite line of Segundo’s was when he was asked, at age 93, how many children he had. He replied something along the lines of, “So far I have …”
Hey, go easy on Mike Patton. He only rocked that goober haircut for one album. By the time Angel Dust rolled around he looked (if perhaps didn’t act) for the most part like a functioning adult human. More or less.
So the reason for Flavowire’s continuing excoriation of Mo Tucker is because she is involved in the tea party movement? Wow.
Tom Waits!
Alison Goldfrapp didn’t release “her” debut album; Goldfrapp are a duo consisting of her and Will Gregory.
Yeah, Tom Waits is missing. Or Thurston Moore? Beck?
Gavin Friday
kathleen hanna and pj harvey deserve to be in this list much more than alison or peaches….
David Bowie: Venture Bros. character. TOO AWESOME.
Greg Dulli
Patti Smith
Dave Grohl hasn’t done too shabbily
The Beastie Boys
Agree on Tom Waits
Dr. Dre
Rick Rubin (despite some dubious productions)
Damon Albarn
Britt Daniel — Spoon
Merle Haggard
Kris Kristofferson
Willie Nelson
Stevie Nicks
Robert Plant
Kate Bush (if only a new album would come out too!)
Tony Bennett
David Byrne
PJ Harvey.
Mike Patton is a musical genius. He has never shied away from being experimental with his music. Cheers to him.
Mark Mothersbaugh! For reals. Also WTF with NOT including David Byrne?
Tom Waits, definitely.
And Mark Mothersbaugh too.
I definitely agree that PJ Harvey should be on that list. But what about Tori Amos? How could she be left out?
How can Prince not be on this list??
Paul Simon. (My dream is that someday he and Edie Brickell will do an album together.)
Amanda Palmer. When you start of a career strong and never dip, you only get more awesome.
Nick Cave, duh!
Todd Rundgren!
Tom Waits, Kate Bush, Gil-Scott Heron.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails should be on this list…does 45 constitute old? Apart from that weird ass green goo video for Deep, Reznor is incapable of being uncool.
Tin Machine a misstep? really? maybe the 2nd album, but “Heaven’s In Here”? “Video Crime”? “Bus Stop”? Oh wait, you’ve never actually heard Tin Machine, have you?
Yes, I have. And if you think either of those albums stand up to 70s era Bowie, you need new ears. Sorry.
Damn. You left out: Ian Hunter, Ray Davies, Colin Hay, Robert Plant, Levon Helm? Bob Dylan? David Byrne? Steve Winwood? Peter Gabriel? Roger Daltry? At the pleasure of fluff artists like Slick and Goldfrapp? Score: -7/10 cred.
so Tin Machine is a misstep because it’s not Ziggy Stardust? By that estimate, you’ve left out a bulkloader’s-worth of DB albums far more worthy of that label. I guess I made the mistake of enjoying the 1st TM release in the context of what else was out that year [stacked up nicely w/Bleach & Pretty Hate Machine - beat the shit outta Like A Prayer & Fine Young Cannibals] as opposed to the rest of the Bowie catalog
I didn’t say it wasn’t Ziggy Stardust. I said it wasn’t as good as his 70s output in general – i.e., I don’t think it’s anywhere near the standard set by Ziggy, Hunky Dory, your namesake Aladdin Sane, Low, Heroes, Station to Station, etc etc – and, for that matter, it also pales in comparison to Scary Monsters. If the Tin Machine stuff was recorded by someone who’d never made an album, it’d be decent if unremarkable meat-and-potatoes rock. But *in my opinion*, for an artist as talented and capable as David Bowie, it constituted a mis-step.
I’ll grant that the second Tin Machine record is better than Never Let Me Down, though
Faint praise, indeed. I’ll take “Pretty Thing” or “Baby Can Dance” over anything off of Tonight. But i could go the rest of my life without ever hearing Let’s Dance again, either…
Jax: I second the Greg Dulli nomination.
@Alad N – true, true. Although curiously, M Ward’s cover of it is really good:

@Tom – meh. I actually meant the whole album & you don’t wanna get me started on the “let’s do a stripped-down version to allegedly unearth the gem beneath the original’s production ‘cuz it’ll only take a few hours of studio time & allows us to simultaneously name-check, one-up, & ride on the coattails of someone far more famous” thing. you might as well put a sticker on it that says: “Attn: College radio DJs – fake cutting-edge cred w/bonus nostalgia inside!!” …but i’m a week or 2 late for commenting on all those “covers” lists…
Reznor needs to be on this list, his and Atticus’ soundtrack for The Social Network was mind blowing.
Right about Jarvis. I saw him/Pulp first on Conan O Brien taped show late 90′s. He looked like Conan’s twin, hardly a heartthrob. He was very strange and I’m pretty sure Conan copied his signature string dance from Jarvis. He’s 50 now and he’s become likeable and charming and, no homo, but he’s strangely attractive.
why is Alad N. Sane being such a dickweed? Why you being so pretentious, Alad? It’s not like you’re the only Bowie fan among us or something, what the hell.
