You overlooked Garth Williams. He did Charlotte’s web, the Little House on the Prairie books and a number of amazing illustrations for Little Golden books.

And what about Dare Wright’s amazing photgraphs for “The Lonely Doll”?

I had a book with that very same illustration of Ferdinand as a child – that picture was always one of my favorites :)

WOW — I forgot about The Phantom Toll Booth. I LOVED this book as a child!

Also loving that you featured the classic “Madeline” from Little Golden Books. For all you vintage, inspired music lovers be sure to check out Golden Records, the retro music that supplemented Little Golden Books. We are very excited to discuss the relaunch of this great label before its official digital release and would love you guys to be a part of it.

You forgot Mother Etheldred Breeze Barry..remember all of those lovely
little children in red capes?

Dahlov Ipcar’s books/illustrations were my favorite: http://www.dahlovipcar.com/

Cat at Night was a particular fave. I searched obsessively for a decent copy and a few years ago I finally found one. It’s definitely a treasure.

Wanda Gag
Arthur Rackham
Winsor McCay
Ezra Jack Keats
Gustav Doré
Walter Crane
N.C. Wyeth
Howard Pyle
Maxfield Parrish
Dante Gabrielle Rossetti
and I third Garth Williams, and that’s just off the top of my head. And if Shel Silverstein’s vintage, gotta add Eric Carle and about twenty or thirty others.

I love these – have shared on FB, thanks!

Nice, but an illustration from 1955 is not “vintage.” I would expect an illustration to be at least 100 years old to merit that description.

Very narrow-minded list – you missed all of the Crockett Johnson books from the 40′s and 50′s: Barnaby, Harold and the Purple Crayon series, The Carrot Seed. Set the pattern for the Phanton Tollbooth. Crockett Johnson also took in Maurice Sendak so Sendak was a descendant of the Johnson school. No Tenniel as well? Shocking!!

and not forgetting Edward Ardizzone

I don’t think I saw The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrice Potter…that was my favorite when I was a child, the pictures lead me to sleep many a night in my dreams. http://www.wiredforbooks.org/kids/beatrix/sn1.htm and my daughter favorite ever…she had it memorized by the age of 4 and would quote it for us regularly, The Tale of Custard The Dragon by Ogden Nash, possibly the best of the best! Oh dear, I just looked up that one and the new pictures are not at all what exist in my very old book. I’ll have to search for the old one and snap a few!

Yes, yes, Garth Williams. I loved his books as a kid and still do.
