10 Female DJs You Should Know

36

Motion Sickness of Time Travel

Wait, she’s not a DJ! But before you take your outrage to the comment section, have a listen to this. It’s probably our favorite mix of 2011, and we’re hoping that it might encourage Rachel Evans toward spending more time behind the decks.

Dj mag’s list is stupid anyway. Fucking Skillex beating Benny Benassi?

did i write this list!? excellent picks

OK, I like this list a lot but what about Annie Mac? Or Nervo? Or Gina Turner? Or Tamara Sky? I think you’ve barely scratched the surface here! I am a female blogger and I have often thought about how grossly underrepresented we are in this industry. The claims of PLUR, one love and being accepted only pertain to the audience. You don’t see female DJs headlining festivals in the US, except for Annie Mac at Hard Haunted Mansion and you certainly dont see female DJs in the Top 100 DJ Mag poll. Often you’ll see big breasted woman staring seductively at you from the computer screen as the image for a song on YouTube OR better yet, just her breast and no head. Females, unfortunately, have been reduced to accessories in this industry- gogo dancers, “models” or overly sexualized versions of themselves. It’s sad and I hate it and I dream about one day headlining a festival and if weren’t for this group of women it really would be a boys club. Thanks for posting this!

Andrea Parker, who runs Touching Bass records, is super amazing/weird, as is Mira Calix, though I tend to prefer her production to her DJ stuff.

Mia Moretti. Her live sets are amazing, especially when she performs with Caitlin Moe on violin.

That list was such an own goal, I can’t think why they published it.Contrast with Mixmag, who gave away a Maya Jane Cole cover CD in the same month. And the female hate aside – David Guetta the best DJ in the world? Really?

I miss Electric Indigo and Acid Maria and Miss Djax and Silvie Marks and Tina 303!

See also, Colette, J Phlip, Heather

Nothing new here…I love Nervo personally

People vote, that’s what makes that list. You want to see someone up there…vote for them. Guetta may not be the best but he got the most votes. No ladies up there? No one voted for them.

Oh, and I think Cassy and Ida Engberg are two of my favorite DJ’s…and they’re girls

Spinnerett I also love the djs u mentioned specially Annie Mac and Tamara Sky. Have u guys heard tamara’s mixtapes? Shes killing the mixtape game, i.e her lil death mix. Annie Mac is pioneer in introducing new music to the world with BBC radio. Plus her sets are amazing! At least she should b on that list. What a joke. The only Dj I like from that list is daft punk.

Nice list! But no DJ Rekha?

Denis Kurtel and Nina Kraviz!!!!

Dj Mag should do a Top 100 Female DJ list. Yes it is stupid, a Dj should be judged by their skills not their genitals but it’s a good solution since this problem will never go away. Either way Dj mag is a joke. What about Tina T & Tamara Sky? This year Tina won Best Female Dj Award in Vegas and Tamara won Best DJ(not female but DJ) in Miami. Annie Mac should be on top 20 at least. Most os these guys I’ve never heard of before, there are so many good male Djs/Producers that never made the list like Diplo, Ac Slater, Fake Blood, Brodinski, Boys Noize…. Yeah… whatever… consider yourself lucky not to be on this list.

is bearbot considered a dj? i loooove her.

Miss Kittin was new in 1998….

@martinfrancisco – And your point is……?

what about electric indigo – founder of the global “female pressure” network or cio d’or? what about all these fem djs’s who don’t want to be part of the dj-business but are great djs with damn good skills. i don’t see the importance of that list. my gender is music – what is yours?

OF course as one could imagine, there’s always some favorite DJ or genre of music missing or left out of any top 10. My question is deeper – do we live in such an un-diverse world where there’s not even 1 black, or 1 hispanic or 1 asian or let me put it bluntly based on this list – one cluelessly reading this ‘tea bagger’ list of girl DJs – would think there’s only white female DJs?!? Who does Flavorpill really think they’re talking to these days? Flavorpill should change its name to FlavorLESS…sad to say. There’s DJ Kerry, DJ Rashida, DJ Beverly Bond, DJ Spinderella, just to name a few to pick from but hell were there even white female djs before it became TRENDY? This article makes me sick…

@DIVERSIFY – well, the thing is, we’re all rampaging white supremacist lunatics here. Isn’t that obvious?

Honestly, I did look at this list and wonder where are the African-American and/or Latina women. And I also wondered if the list included more European DJs and was not meant to cover American DJs. A third thought, is any lady on this list capable of scratching, juggling, transforming, crabbing, etc. I didn’t see anything pertaining to turntable tricks, which are just as essential to DJ skills, as premixing and preproduction (as most DJs are doing with Serato/Ableton/Maschine these days). Perhaps a title to the list should be “Top Euro/House/Trance Female DJs” or something. Just a thought.

sorry dj chloe !!! :)

sorry: dj chloe ! ! !

:)

Kate Simko out of Chicago is also an excellent DJ, and she makes wonderful music as well; she releases music on the Spectral Sound label among others.

I can also concur with the person who mentioned Andrea Parker above, I watched her play at a party in Detroit and she killed it behind the decks.

DJ MAG TOP 100 is a popularity contest not a talent contest. Good selection of women DJs here, FLAVORPILL. Nice work

[...] the current DJ scene, we’re lucky that our friends over at Flavorwire are! You should check out their response piece highlighting some awesome female DJs that you may already know, or may want to get to [...]
