10 Internet Memes That Became Commercials

Honey Badger for Wonderful Pistachios

Up until 2011, most people didn’t even know what a honey badger looked like. Then, along came “The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger” video, which taught the world that honey badgers are totally badass creatures that simply don’t give a fuck. Earlier this fall, pop culture-savvy nut brand Wonderful Pistachios snapped up Honey Badger — and Randall, the distinctive voice behind the viral sensation — for an ad that finds him using a cobra to crack pistachio shells.

You guys totally missed the “It’s getting real in the Whole Foods parking lot” guy, although maybe that it not really a meme. Still, amusing to see him popping back up in a car commercial.

It’s not quite a meme I guess, but the father/daughter who sang “Home” by Edward Sharpe together are on a commercial now, but it’s super cute instead of terribly annoying and out of touch.

Probably the best example is the T-Shirt War commercial for McDonalds. They got the original guys to make it, but it actually looked better.

Forgive my memory… what were those odd, huge-eyed animated creatures that sang about the moon “cause it is close to us!” It was either Subway, Blimpie, or Quizno’s who used them in a commercial. It was probably a good 9 years ago or so…. Maybe the first internet-to-ad repurpose?

@Beth It was the Spongmonkeys from rathergood.com. It’s the first time I recall seeing a meme being repurposed for a 30 sec spot, too.
