Dreamlike Photos of Abandoned Cars Taken from the Back Seat

5

Alícia Rius’ photos of abandoned spaces peer inside dusty, forgotten worlds where the Spanish-born artist uncovers lost relics. Rius’ latest project, however, takes her to the back seat of rusted-out, deserted cars. “I did not plan this project. I never looked for these cars, and in fact, I think they found me. I wanted to immortalize their beauty and turn them into something romantic,” she recently shared with Junk Culture. It’s clear looking at Rius’ images that the element of discovery and fantasy is important to her process. She keeps a blog that details what appear to be invented stories about her finds. The car photos are no different, as Rius’ intimate perspective creates a vivid narrative for the viewer to play out in their mind. The results are dream-like, particularly since weeds and flowers have reclaimed the metal machines, shrouding them from the world outside. Slide into the back seat past the break, where we’ve also shared a few of Rius’ other works that explore an abandoned eyeglass shop and more.

Reminds me of some old VWs a long ago neighbour left behind when he moved out. We’d play in them often & it was sad for us local kids when they were finally towed away. Little did I know back then that these were the same car model so many serial murderers owned in the 1970s, hehe! No direct connection to HIM of course, just adds a little creepiness to the otherwise innocent memories. (By the way, the next occupants of the house also owned a similar VW! :)

@nixskits: nice!

“…flowers have reclaimed the metal machines.” I love work that reminds me of the poetic power of nature and these photos do that beautifully. While we yell to be heard, nature whispers.

I love the description of my work. I really appreciate when people do not only copy/paste from blog to blog but they take their time to understand what I do.

Thanks! X

@Tempestt: i agree. thanks!

@Alicia Rius: thanks! you’re quite welcome. beautiful work.
