Tomorrow would have been the 45th birthday of legendary grunge hero Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide at age 27 to the despair of the world at large. Though we know there were many times in his life when he was a happy, goofy guy, he very publicly struggled with depression, addiction, and illness, and when you think of Cobain, you tend to think of a doleful guy barely looking out from behind his matted blond locks. So, to celebrate the good times in Cobain’s life, we’ve collected a series of photographs with family, friends, and bandmates, where the guy just looks really happy. Because that’s how we’d like to remember him. Click through to see Kurt Cobain smile a whole lot, and if we’ve missed your favorite photo, direct us to it in the comments!

Thank you for featuring pictures of smiles and laughter to celebrate his life.
The captions (so slight, so stupid) almost ruin the magic. I miss this man.
GREAT photos! Dumb captions.
I agree. The captions are quite fan girly
I’m about to leave this site because of your misuse of the English language. You literally need a sub editor.
BTW. He’s smiling in most of the pictures because he’s high. I’m a huge Nirvana fan but there’s no denying that Kurt was a hopeless drug addict.
It’s like she’s captioning her Facebook photos. Makes me wonder if the editor is old enough to remember when Cobain was alive.
Jeez, the people who comment on Flavorwire are the WORST. You guys are never happy.
45 today? Wow I just can’t imagine Kurt as a 45-year old.
Jesus people, get over the fucking captions.
Just a note: he’s not in Burroughs outhouse, he’s in his orgone accumulator (or were you joking?)
“Eye candy”? (re #6) more like “High candy”.
Note to Margot: If you’re going to complain about our use of the English language, do try to refrain from splitting your infinitives while doing so…

Great slide show! As for everybody who has a pineapple up there asses about captions, remember the guy you read this article for and not what the captions say. This person took the time to do this and you didn’t so stop bitching!
“Blanket forts are the best”… “oh hey”… ?!? … You guys are selling ad space! You have endorsements!
Please respect your grown up readers. Proof-read, edit, and care for the intellectual quality of what you put out there, which is, after all, what drew us in to you page in the first place.
“Just an average dude” — is this honestly what you think average dudes look like? wow, where do you live? that’s a very above average looking dude, modelesque. I have to just not look at the puerile little commentary – Kurt would barf.
Dear Margot: He was high, that’s why he was happy. I don’t care about the captions, he was awesome, talented and so handsome; these are pics to enjoy, stop it and do it!
Kurt Cobain @ 45 = Phil Collins
These pictures made me smile. Kurt was incredibly handsome, and so talented. I still miss him.
Thanks for posting these, the majority I have never seen. He was a gorgeous man and it kind of gives me a shiver that pictures of him never look dated.
this is fuckin beautiful.
Kurt was a true artist and a visualy beautiful man. With his extreme blue eyes that spoke emotion. He is truly missed
Great photos! Who cares about the captions? These photos truly show how beautiful Kurt was. He really was such an amazing artist, and unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to fulfill his true potential.
Boy, is Ewan McGregor a doppelganger for red (or pink) headed Kurt or bloody what?!
Here’s a really happy Kurt:

A great way to remember such a great talent.

Nirvana.
We were the same age when he died. I was stunned by his death and still feel a real sense of loss. Thanks for posting his lighter side he really was a funny guy. Not all darkness and pain.
What a great man. Truely changed the way our ears and minds translated the sound of music. Thanks kurt. I recently visited his old home and the park next door where the bench their is a sort of monument or tribute for him. Very moving experience for me. Rest in peace, we know it was courtney.
Wow. Emily, thanks for choosing to commemorate such a phenomenal artist in a way that doesn’t judge, preach, or dredge up all the same old shit we “know” about him (whoever made that comment about his wife, you really are a point-misser, and that sucks for you). And I’m generally a grammar Nazi, but . . . The whole point of this article has nothing to do with words. And blanket forts kick ass. Even if he had turned into Phil Collins, that wouldn’t have taken anything away from the art he gave us . . . See what I just did? I nearly ruined the article by reading pointless comments and leaving one of my own. Kurt, his band, his voice, his music – they were what made high school bearable for me. Cliche? Sure. But doesn’t mean it isn’t the truth. I certainly hope that when I shuffle off this mortal coil, I will have touched someone’s life in a way that makes them hunt down 29 or more photos of me looking happy – high, dry, fat, thin, bad hair days, w/e – and feel moved enough to collate, edit, and put them in a rose-colored captiontastic slideshow for all the world to see!
