Bizarre Portraits Featuring Wounds Crafted from Candy and Ice Cream

A sickly sweet photo series by Utrecht-based photographer Ashkan Honorvar stopped us dead in our tracks this morning, thanks to a tip from website io9. Using photos of First World War soldiers who suffered extreme facial injuries, the artist recreated their images — aiming to address issues of identity and the lasting psychological effects of combat — using rainbow-colored candy and gooey ice cream. The bizarre, startling portraits of men slathered in sprinkles, frosting, and jellybeans — which have been transformed into mutilated, visceral wounds — are a sight to behold. See more of Honarvar’s grotesque photo manipulations after the jump.
