Community‘s Donald Glover wants to be the next Spider-Man. And he’s hoping a Facebook petition (Donald Glover 4 Spiderman!!) and Twitter campaign (#donald4spiderman) will at least get his foot in the door. “Some people are mistaken,” he has said. “I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man.”
As io9 notes, there’s nothing about Peter Parker’s history that requires him to be played by a white actor — other than tradition. We love Glover in Community, and from what we’ve heard about his performance in Mystery Team, he has the chops to carry a big-screen part. And he’s certainly more interesting to us than any of the other actors currently in talks for the role (sorry, Billy Elliot and young Voldemort).
What do you think? Could rebooting the franchise with Glover instead of some nerdy white kid equal box office gold? More importantly, how much fun would a funny Spider-Man be?

This may be the stupidest P.C. thought yet. How ’bout a black Superman? Or a Black Batman…better yet, make the Black Panther white, and while we are at it, make Shaft white too…Equality for all! Some characters are white, some are black, some are women. Should people be offended because a heroes name is BatMAN or SuperMAN? How ridiculous does this crap have to get. The world is NOT ready for a black spiderman…The world may be ready for another great black superhero, but do NOT mess with what is already a well established fact. Spiderman is WHITE.

WHAT!!! Spiderman is not black!!! I’m sick of all these FU**ING people trying to be inclusive…Spiderman is white, accept it!
So many things wrong with this article. None of those things are that the actor wants to play Spiderman. He’s a nice enough guy, but he shouldn’t be playing Spiderman. There are some things that are just out of your range that you can’t change. I’m male and like Wonder Woman, but does that mean I should try to petition the ability to make Wonder Woman Wonder Man just so I could play her role? It’s in Spider-Man’s character profile to be white. It’s not tradition, it’s his character.
Secondly, he’s already funny. Spider man has been known for two things, being a continuously down-on-his-luck loser, and being a clever, witty guy.
Thirdly, and this is probably a silly worry, I’m afraid this change might force the team to alter Spider-Man’s character. He’s supposed to be a loser who faces a lot of challenges and stress. It’s what makes him relatable.
Nothing against Donald, he seems like a nice enough guy. But he just shouldn’t try being Spiderman.
Why can’t we just leave colors alone…. this is so silly we are constantly remaking movies with new stuff and they suck more than every… if we are going to start making white guys black I would like to petition to remake SHAFT, Malcom X, and Junk Yard Dog movie with all white guys in them…
If stuff is original leave it…. if the idiot wants to make a superhero movie as a black character let him make his own movie on his own budget… if he thinks he can pull it off…
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING STUPID. AND FUCK THE DUMB-ASSES WHO HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT SHOULD HAPPEN.
Yeah kinda a stupid idea to change his race. instead of changing his race why dont they just make a black superhero and leave spiderman alone
If it were reversed and a black character, who has always been black… For like 50 years… Became a white guy, Jesse Jackson would be marching in the street and Obama would say it’s racist. As far as I am concerned this is reverse racism at it’s finest. Best part, if you are white and do not want a black Spiderman, then YOU are a racist. It’s unreal. Spidey is a white guy. Instead of trying to turn white characters black, why not try to be creative and come up with a new idea. What’s next? A black Luke Skywalker?
I’m all for a Black Batman because nothing in his background suggests he should be white, either.
That argument really only works for most black comic characters, whose origins are already ghettoized or africanized, and even then, you can eminemify Luke Cage and keep his origin.
Let’s face it, Peter Parker is white and Peter Parker is Spiderman…a reason Twitter mobs don’t matter http://www.weltbranding.com/blog/

Peter Parker is white and always will be, unless Peter dies, there will be no “Black” Spiderman.
You can take that dream and shove it up your ass.
can we please stop saying, “reverse racism?” since when is racism directed only toward blacks? help out the cause and give equality to all.
as for the topic at hand, while I agree that some things should be kept traditional, I don’t think that it is at all fair to say a character such as Spiderman should have to be a certain race. comic books are an art form, and all art allows for creative liberties. as long as it’s not a real person, it really doesn’t matter who plays him or her in a movie. just like no actor who has portrayed Batman has actually looked like Batman, whomever plays Spiderman shouldn’t have to look exactly like him either.
art should be light and fun; if it’s meant to stir emotion or start discussions, that’s fine; but otherwise leave race and other serious matters out of it…
I’m amazed at some of the stuff that’s been said here. I don’t think anyone is suggesting, not the least Donald Glover, that the next Spider-man should be black for reasons of political correctness or affirmative action or anything like that. It’s just that Donald Glover is a funny guy and a good actor who’d love a shot at playing his favorite superhero. And superhero movies routinely mangle the plot and characters of the comic books, a purely cosmetic change like race — as long as they don’t go and make this into some kind of ghetto blacksploitation movie, which they won’t — is surely one of the least invasive changes the studio could make.
