Our Pop-Culture Picks for a Special Series of What-If? Scenarios

1

This holiday season, Patrón Tequila came up with a great way to give something to your friends without emptying your wallet. With the “If” Tag app, you can select from a variety of hypothetical scenarios (such as, “If aliens invade, zombies attack, or the robots rise up, you’d be the John Connor to my Kyle Reese), and then select a friend who gets the honor of being your first choice for the gig. You can add a personal message, and then post the whole award right to your friend’s Facebook wall. We were having so much fun with it, in fact, that we decided to take it one step further and pick our top celebrity choices for a number of the “If” scenarios. Click through to see who came out on top for our editors, and why each pop-culture pick made the grade. And if you want to play too, just choose a scenario yourself and tell us who you want in on it in the comments.

+

If you get the feeling it won’t be long until everyone in the world has a smartphone, you’re not alone. The allure of an all-in-one device that makes calls, takes photos, accesses the web, plays music, and does pretty much anything else you can imagine is pretty hard to resist. And with the unveiling of the new HTC Radar™ 4G phone, our friends over at HTC are making it even harder. Featuring a sleek, polished-metal design and 4G speed, it uses the Windows Phone platform to offer innovative functions like Live Tiles for your updates, People Hub for your contacts, and Threads for your conversations. Interactive Interview: Ladytron Talk ‘Gravity the Seducer’

1

It’s a bit staggering to think of the number of bands — not to mention entire movements — that have seen their rise and fall since Ladytron released their debut album 604 in 2001. In the world of electronic pop, longevity is far from a common trait. However, a decade later, the quartet is not only still releasing gorgeously constructed analogue/digital musical hybrids, but doing so without a break or misplaced step. The traditionally black-clad foursome — Daniel Hunt, Reuben Wu, Helen Marnie, and Mira Aroyo — dropped their fifth album, Gravity the Seducer, last month; we caught up with Wu and Aroyo during soundcheck at New York’s Terminal 5 for our latest Flavorpill Interactive Interview, in which they talk about the record, the secret to long-term success, and how they found themselves in Ozzy Osbourne’s old house with Christina Aguilera.

5 New Icelandic Bands You Need to Hear

4

Last week saw the kickoff of the 2011 Iceland Airwaves festival, Reykjavík’s answer to SXSW. Each year, the event draws thousands of attendees from around the world, who come for its unique combination of cutting-edge music and exotic environs. Highlights this time around included performances from SUBTRKT, Tune-Yards, Beach House, Sinead O’Connor, Yoko Ono, and our favorite new Swedes, Niki & The Dove. James Murphy did a DJ set, Jónsi bounced from show to show, and Björk premiered her stunning Biophilia spectacle/concert at equally stunning new concert hall and conference center Harpa. However, beyond all the superstars and international acts, there was something else exciting to discover: Iceland’s own wealth of homegrown talent, which makes up a major percentage of the five-day, citywide festival’s lineup. Here are five of our local favorites.

Meet Blue Kid, the Winner of Our A Band Apart Competition

+

This summer, hundreds of bands from around the nation signed up for a chance to tackle the competition in Flavorpill and FanBridge’s A Band Apart promotion, presented by Stoli vodka. After the first round of votes was in, we presented some of our favorites from each region, all of whom went on to the national round. At that point, things heated up considerably, until only ten acts were left. Then it fell to our judges to choose the winner from those finalists, and we’re happy to report that the decision is in. Allow us to introduce New York’s own Blue Kid, who will be performing at a special Flavorpill showcase during CMJ as part of their reward. Read on to learn more about them, get free music, and find out how you can attend the party yourself.

Enter to Win a Free Cabin on the 2012 Bruise Cruise

+

Ah, life at sea. The sun, the salt air… the blistering rock n’ roll. Yes, after an extremely impressive inaugural run last year, the Bruise Cruise is setting sail again, bringing indie rock back to the ocean for a three-day bonanza that will leave revelers swaying even once they’re back on land. This year’s lineup includes Fucked Up, King Khan & The Shrines, the Soft Pack, the Oh Sees, the Dirtbombs, and more — and while the price of admission is steeper than your average festival (this is an actual cruise, after all), we’re sending one lucky reader and a friend out to sea for free.

Double Takes: Actors Who Have Starred in Two (or More) Hit Shows

22

In case we haven’t made enough noise about it already, we’d like to restate our enthusiasm for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to television with the CW’s new series Ringer. We already used the show’s twins-in-trouble element as a springboard to look at our favorite twins in popular culture, but the dualism got us thinking about something else, too — specifically, how many other actors have been able to successfully star in more than one show during their career, shrugging off typecasting to embody a whole new, equally welcome persona. As Gellar takes on this feat in 2011, here’s a look back at some of the others who have done it, and done it well. Don’t see your favorite? We know we left some out, so feel free to add more in the comments.

An Inside Look at America’s Best Speakeasies

4

We all have our favorite bars: the local go-to spots with good drinks, good music, and good people. But sometimes we need something a little bit more… special. That’s when we turn to our neighborhood speakeasies, the spots you most likely won’t stumble into on your own — mostly because you’d never find them. Hidden behind unmarked doors, secret entrances, or guarded stairwells, these Prohibition-era inspired throwbacks add a hint of mystery and intrigue to a night out, combining a sense of exclusivity with serious mixology.

Inspired by Armani Code Sport’s Dive into the Night Foursquare competition, we offer a roundup of some of the best of these hideaways around the country. Check out the ones you don’t know, tell us your own favorites in the comments, and wherever you go, be sure to check in and take part in the Foursquare challenge — you could win a bottle of Armani Code Sport daily, or even the grand-prize trip to NYC for an Armani shopping spree.
