Daily Dose Pick: Global Inheritance

1

Global Inheritance is a growing network of progressive-minded citizens with well-developed artistic sides, who plan to save the world through art and music. Seriously.

The group is best known for its TRASHed: Art of Recycling campaign, in which artists transform waste bins into functional, portable galleries — a Coachella staple now expanding to Miami’s Ultra Festival and into Argentina. But there’s much more to the story — from LA’s recent (and Portland’s imminent) Environmentaland awareness pop-ups to human-powered DJ tents. Keep up — and do your part — via the Global Inheritance website.

Thom Yorke Announces New Band’s Name & Tour Dates

2

Seeing the moniker Thom Yorke??? on Coachella posters made us imagine someone shrieking the Radiohead musician’s name. Luckily, Yorke has quieted those shrieks by unveiling the official moniker of what he unofficially refers to as “the other band” — henceforth known as Atoms for Peace — which includes musicians Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker, Flea, and Nigel Godrich. The group shares its name with a program initiated by Dwight Eisenhower that distributed nuclear technology to developing nations.

Accompanying this announcement was another (surprise!) announcement  — a list of U.S. tour dates that will lead up to their late-April performance at Coachella. Follow the jump for info on the tour dates and cities.

What’s on at Flavorpill: Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

1

Today at Flavorpill, we wondered if Google paper towels are more absorbent. We were frightened by the story of a Peruvian gang killing people for their fat. We disagreed with Slate’s take on book trailers. We were blown away by Spencer Krug’s energy. We learned to be wary of any apartment with a portable sauna. We were excited for a new play about Muhammad Ali, starring Ben Vereen and Evan Parke. We analyzed the art of dating through Venn diagrams. We hoped that the rumors that Muse will headline Coachella were true. We had a hard time wrapping our heads around the idea of a new theme park in Rome that will have rides inspired by Ben-Hur and the films of Fellini. We found this beard head-cage appalling but awesome. And finally, we discovered 34 ways the New Moon movie is better than the book. Just looking at Taylor Lautner shirtless, we can come up with six.

[Editor's note: The following dispatch was co-authored by Flavorpill co-founder Sascha Lewis and his little bro David Morrow — but mostly David. We're glad they both survived the weekend so we can make them write about it again for us next year. Enjoy!]

Even for East Coasters, Coachella is a legend. When we set out on our festival expedition a day later than most, we were well aware of the mouthwatering acts we’d miss on Friday (including a now legendary 3-hour set from Paul McCartney) and the tough decisions that would lie ahead (if there was ever a time to be in front of two stages simultaneously…). But we were determined to make the panicked rush down the Grand Central Expressway and a 2,500 mile trip worth our while by packing as much Coachella into one weekend as humanly possible. After the jump, a few of our favorite things… Read More »
