HBO’s Hung Hidden Talent Contest Winners Announced!

+

Earlier this month we held a hiddent talent contest inspired by HBO’s popular new series Hung. The idea behind the show — which was created by Dmitry Lipkin (The Riches), is executive produced by Alexander Payne (Sideways), and stars Thomas Jane, Jane Adams, and Anne Heche — is rather unique. Ray Drecker, a former high-school sports legend, is now a middle-aged high-school basketball coach. He’s divorced, struggling to support his kids, and virtually homeless after his house catches fire. That’s when he decides to take on a second job — as a gigolo.

But enough foreplay. We’ve gone through all of your entries and finally chosen our winners. For the record, you guys are a lot stranger (and more talented!) than we ever would have guessed. Read More »

The Rehearsal Project Short-Film Contest Winner Announced!

1

The Rehearsal Project Short-Film Contest came to a close this week and our judging panel have been hard at work wading through submissions and selecting the winner. In the end it was Jonathan Poritsky‘s short film “Process” (embedded after the jump) that took the prize — selected for astutely and skillfully interpreting the idea of “life as performance” through a simple and beautifully shot monologue from Nazi Karimi. Enter Social Designer’s Charity T-Shirt Contest

+

We have a serious love for graphic t-shirts, so when Flavorpill NYC’s managing editor Leah Taylor was chosen to be the judge of Social Designer’s Kids Story t-shirt design competition (which benefits our friends at 826 National — a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting expository and creative writing for kids ages 6-18.) we were all over it. That, and we’re a big fan of both their owl mascot and unbelievably cool mission: “to spark new thinking about the issues that matter most by encouraging the design community to create fun, socially-relevant graphics for tees, totes and other goods.” Read More »

Inhabit and Dwell Mag Ask Designers to Reimagine the ‘Burbs

+

Our friends over at Inhabitat are partnering with Dwell Magazine on ReBurbia, a design competition that invites “future-forward architects, urban designers, renegade planners and imaginative engineers” to reenvision the American suburb:

What would a McMansion become if it weren’t a single-family dwelling? How could a vacant big box store be retrofitted for agriculture? What sort of design solutions can you come up with to facilitate car-free mobility, ‘burb-grown food, and local, renewable energy generation? We want to see how you’d design future-proof spaces and systems using the suburban structures of the present, from small-scale retrofits to large-scale restoration–the wilder the better!

The winner will take home a $1,000 cash prize and will score a feature in the December issue of Dwell and an editorial feature on Inhabitat. Entries are due by August 1st. Click here for more details.

Exclusive: Sneak-Peek at The Rehearsal, Eleanor Catton’s Debut Novel

1

Joshua Ferris calls it the “future of the novel” and even lit-world curmudgeons are lining up to heap praise. Eleanor Catton’s debut, The Rehearsal, finds the 23-year-old Kiwi author toying bravely with narrative and form to conjure the hormonal aftermath of a high school sex scandal. Suffused with tense music lessons and drama-club drama, The Rehearsal depicts life as performance with both sadness and wit.

To celebrate the emergence of this provocative young voice, Flavorpill is teaming up with independent publishing house GRANTA and London’s School of Life to launch The Rehearsal Project Short-Film Contest. Click here for full contest details and an interview with Eleanor Catton. Fancy a little inspiration? Then head below for an advance peek at the novel.

Zachary Palmer, We Salute You! [Contest Winner]

+

Remember last Friday when we convinced 50 New Yorkers to flash the Horns? It was wild. We also asked Flavorwire readers to submit their own heavy metal-inspired portraits for a chance to win one of Viva Radio star Gerry Mak’s limited-edition tees for American Apparel. Above, the our favorite submission from one Zachary Palmer (who just so happens to be the Nightlife Editor at The L Magazine), taken when he used to work the front door of Don Hill’s during MisShapes.

Congrats to Zachary, and thanks to everyone else for playing!

Watch the New Gorillaz Documentary and Win! [Giveaway]

14

Damon Albarn isn’t one to indulge in much downtime. While he’s made big news lately with the announcement of a Blur reunion, he’s been making more waves this decade with his animated band Gorillaz. Director Ceri Levy was in on the ground floor when Albarn and co-creator Jamie Hewlett (of Tank Girl fame) came up with the band, and spent six years documenting it’s progress. The result is Bananaz, a 90-minute film following the cartoon group’s rapid rise to fame. Online video purveyor Babelgum has the exclusive full-length premiere up now, free to watch ahead of the June 1st DVD release. To help celebrate, we’ve got a full Gorillaz CD/DVD discography to give away. After the jump, check the details to enter, and watch preview clips from the film.
