It’s finally starting to feel like summer around here, and we don’t mean that in a technical, post-June 21 sense, but more in a wearing-shorts-and-feeling-hot-and-sticky sense. In honor of rising temperatures, today’s search term was “salsa,” and the fact that this word connotes both spicy food and spicy dance moves was completely intentional. Don’t overheat, though, because we wouldn’t want to have to bring you Found Photo Fridays: Cold-Showers-and-Baseball next week. Read More »
On Fridays, we bring you a selection of photos, each of which relates back to one word. Today’s word, inspired by the Diet Coke that sustains us through most every afternoon (and some mornings), was “soda.” We plugged it into Flickr’s search box, and after the jump are the best images that came up. Disclaimer: any bias for Coke or Pepsi that you may perceive within this set of photos is entirely unintentional. Read More »
While browsing Flickr in search of suitable images for today’s edition of Found Photo Fridays, we had our minds on our money and our money on our minds. More specifically, we were thinking about the global economy and whether or not we have a role in it. (Answer: inconclusive.) We also learned that “money” is just gold when it comes to thinking of clever and punny names for photos. The first one below, for example, was named “Money Laundering.” How brilliant is that? Almost as brilliant as the British currency lined up exactly to someone’s face and called “The Money Shot.” Enjoy these fiscal photos — as long as you can snake WiFi off your neighbor, they’re absolutely free. Welcome to another installment of Found Photo Fridays, wherein we type a random word into Flickr and (to use what we always thought was a particularly clever Polaroid slogan) “see what develops.” Today we’re drawing inspiration from an alternate reality that involves us spending this overcast New York day on a sunny beach somewhere. While we have explored lawn chairs in the past, today we bring our attention to a related, but wholly distinct, sitting apparatus: beach chairs. (The critical difference, in case you’re wondering, is the absence of lawn and the presence of beach.) Just sit back and imagine the sand between your toes. Read More »
This week’s Flickr Photos are the product of semantical error. We meant to enter “rear view mirror”, but instead we typed “rear view window”. This was probably the combined result of drinking too much on Thursday night and a recent Hitchcock binge. Anywho. After wondering why there were so many weird pictures of windows and questioning Flickr’s filtration system a little. We looked at the search box and realized our mistake. Apparently, though, a lot of other people confuse these two (relatively different) terms because we still found plenty of rear view mirror pics to choose from. We were lazy, so we decided to roll with it. On a totally unrelated note — shout out to “folkyouover” for our favorite Flickr handle ever.

Despite the preponderance of cheesy fence expressions, we were really into them this week on Flickr. We will forgive the photographers for quoting “Desperado” hundreds and hundreds of times and forget the miserly cracks about sturdy fences making good neighbors (in fact, we accept that our own title might be a little corny). The pictures were cool enough that we stopped looking at their titles…

This week’s found photos come from a weirdly perceptive suggestion left by one of our readers: Chimneys. Who knew there were so many different ways to release smoke from your fireplace? We saw industrial stacks, tin pipes, Victorian brick numbers, stucco Greek chimneys — there were even some ancient stone ones that we assume were used in prehistorical druid ceremonies (not to sound like nerdy fantasy novel enthusiast or anything…). In short, our exploration of the word “chimney” opened our eyes. Plus, we added the Library of Congress’ photo page to our ever growing pool of random Flickr awesomeness. After the jump, you’ll never see chimneys in the same light again. And leave more suggestions please!

We learned some important things about Flickr this morning. First, there is a remarkably prolific photographer somewhere who likes to take pictures of dolls wearing wigs. Searching the word “wig” will produce an embarrassment of these creepy little masterpieces for anyone who’s interested. Next, “brick wall” (unsurprisingly, in retrospect) will get you a very long list of Pink Floyd references. Read More »
