Johnny Depp may not have taken home any acting awards this year (he did get nominated, somewhat generously, for roles in both Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist), but his losing streak ends today. As Pop Candy reports, the Headwear Association — apparently a real, century-old organization — has named Depp Hat Person of the Year. And while we still have some quibbles with the Academy’s picks this year, we think the Headwear folks made a great choice.
In fact, so enamored are we with Depp’s on- and off-screen hat choices that we’ve decided to devote an entire installment of our series In Praise of Demented Fashion Icons to the only star in Hollywood who can make homeless chic work on the red carpet. Meanwhile, we’re pretty sure his scarves could also support a post of their own.

As we may have already mentioned, the ’90s were back in a big way on the runways of New York Fashion Week. That’s why for the latest installment of our recurring series “In Praise of Demented Fashion Icons,” we’re looking to a childhood TV favorite for inspiration: Saved by the Bell. And if we’re going to be combing the halls of Bayside High, it only makes sense that we would turn to the most popular girl in school for style tips. If you missed our inaugural post on John Waters’ best blazers, be sure to check it out — especially for the lumberjack caught in a snowstorm look. Which provides a nice segue into this week’s style icon: Roseanne Connor. For the close to a decade that Roseanne was on the air, the titular star was far from what you call a fashion world darling. That is why we’re launching a new series called “In Praise of Demented Fashion Icons,” to celebrate the true style rebels of our time. Inspired by his recent photo op with Justin Bieber, of all people, we’re kicking things off with a retrospective of John Waters’ craziest and most wonderful blazers. Although he laments that many assume his wardrobe comes straight from the thrift store, Waters dedicates an entire chapter of his most recent book, Role Models, to praising the subversive designs of Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons. We’re sure she’s responsible for many of the insane looks we’ve collected.
