Pic of the Day: Fight For Your Right Revisited

+

Earlier this week it was announced that “Fight For Your Right Revisited,” a short film written and directed by Adam Yauch, would premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Now, thanks to Stereogum, we’ve got a photo of Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, and Danny McBride, who are presumably playing Mike D, Ad-Rock, and MCA. The cast also includes Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black, and while we don’t know anything about the plot, we do have this tagline: “After the boys leave the party.” We’re intrigued. Click through if you need to refresh your memory on the original clip.

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we couldn’t decide whether to be impressed or depressed by the world’s first graffiti on polar icebergs. We were oddly mesmerized by this supercut of characters saying “blah blah blah” in films. We got a good look inside of Mark Zuckerberg’s old Palo Alto rental. We loved this series of minimalistic posters by Justin Van Genderen that look at some great comic book/graphic novel locations. We played a round of tech blog bingo. We decided that David Bowie and Bing Crosby are greater than Jack Black and Jason Segel — at least when it comes to dueting on “Little Drummer Boy.” We met Brad Ellis, the quiet bearded man who plays the piano on Glee. We thought that Snoop Dogg looked pretty sharp in a naval uniform. And finally, we wondered if moving to Boulder, CO, would increase our IQ. It’s number one on Portfolio.com’s list of America’s smartest cities, while New York didn’t even crack the top 25.

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds In Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we tried to understand the multiple levels of symbolism at work in Katy Perry’s Simpsons cameo. We looked at famous skylines made out of old computer parts. We wished that TRON: Lebowski was getting a theatrical release. We met the female filmmaker spearheading the “film sleepy” genre, which actually sounds even more boring than mumblecore. We listened to Billy Joel’s entire catalog, all at once. We were intrigued by Adam Yauch’s “Fight for Your Right Revisited,” a short that is playing Sundance and features Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black in its cast. We clapped our hands in excitement over the latest installment of Edith Zimmerman’s super hilarious Letters to the Editors of Women’s Magazines. We appreciated this comprehensive roundup of all of the Hulks on Twitter. And finally, we were surprised to hear that James Franco has an underwear line. But probably not as surprised as he was.

Rate-a-Trailer: Gulliver’s Travels

1

There’s something that’s off in the trailer for Rob Letterman‘s (Monsters vs Aliens) new Jack Black comedy Gulliver’s Travels. Maybe it’s the unbelievable storyline: Black plays a mailroom clerk who gets demoted by some kid, and then plagiarizes his way into a travel writing assignment that sends him to the Bermuda Triangle. Maybe it’s the weird romantic plot: Amanda Peet + Jack Black does not compute. Maybe it’s the fact that Hollywood has taken Jonathan Swift’s hidden island of Lilliput and turned it into a full on bro-fest, complete with fist bumps and Foosball tables. (In fact, if he saw this, he’d probably want to eat Letterman and turn his skin into ladies gloves.) Maybe it’s our frustration that the fantastic Emily Blunt doesn’t event get to speak! Or maybe we’re just bitter because this is yet another movie that’s coming out in 3D, and that’s $20 we weren’t looking to spend.

Meat Loaf and Jack Black Team Up for “Like a Rose”

1

Meat Loaf’s new concept album, Hang Cool Teddy Bear (a line you might recognize from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls), drops on May 11. If you’ve seen his gripping episode of Behind the Music, then you know what a big deal it is that he’s even still around; since breaking onto the rock ‘n roll scene with Bat Out of Hell in 1977, he’s seen some highs (a Grammy!) and lows (bankruptcy, a heart condition). With this latest, Meat Loaf teamed up with producer Rob Cavallo, who is known for his work with modern acts like Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and Paramore. “I wanted it big,” he explained in a statement. “I wanted it dramatic. I wanted a rock record.”

Listen below as Tenacious D.’s Jack Black duets with Meat Loaf on “Like a Rose.” Not exactly groundbreaking material, but it made us smile.

Quote of the Day: Team Tenacious D or Team M.I.A.?

+

quote

While this can’t really compare to the  Tori vs. Gaga feud, we were surprised last week when M.I.A. unleashed her wrath via Twitter about Tenacious D replacing the Beastie Boys on the 2009 Outside Lands Festival lineup. (“Can’t believe they replaced Beasties with Tenacious D? And if I pull out they sue! So really? Tenacious D after me?”) We’re glad to hear Jack Black isn’t letting it get him down, and by all accounts, their performance was a big success. Satan even showed up on stage; check out an image after the jump. [via MTV] Read More »

What’s on at Flavorpill: Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

1

Today at Flavorpill, we found ourselves hopelessly addicted to playing Hit Machine. We wondered what Jack Black ever did to M.I.A. We embraced hybrid thinking. We found it interesting that the pop culture vampire craze might help out the Red Cross. We wanted to go to Ikea in China. We got lit with Vice. We realized that we might not be as good at multi-tasking as we once thought. We debated what collegess should teach. We found it ironic that Urban Outfitters will sell the last Polaroid cameras. We got high with Shel Siverstein. And finally we felt really bad for Conan O’Brien. See why below.

10 Sex Laws That Defy Logic

6

Did you know that there is a law in Florida that prohibits anyone from having sex with a porcupine? And in Massachusetts, it’s illegal to have sex with a rodeo clown in front of horses, but only at a rodeo? In Colorado, it’s against the law to kiss a sleeping woman. Do we really think that these are necessary? For your amusement, or, depending on where you live, your own good, we’ve gathered together ten of the strangest sex laws still on the books. Read More »

Harold and Humor: An Evening With the Director of Year One

+

In his upcoming Bible-belting farce Year One, Harold Ramis stars as Adam, an opportune role for the former ace of American comedy. Indeed, Ramis was in large part responsible (as the lead scribe) for modern comedy’s version of Original Sin, that ne plus ultra of Greek-life propaganda Animal House. On Friday night at the Times Center, the cheeky writer-director-actor regaled the audience with thirty-plus years of anecdotes and asides to hype his latest film. Read More »

A-List Casting Buzz: Has Hollywood Run Out of Original Ideas Edition

2

WILL SMITH and STEVEN SPIELBERG are in talks to team up for a remake of a Korean drama about a man imprisoned for 15 years and then released with a cell phone, some money and no explanation. It will be a nice change of pace for Spielberg who is next slated to work on a TINTIN movie with the incredibly shrinking PETER JACKSON. [Variety]

JACK BLACK has been cast as the lead in a “contemporary re-imagining” of GULLIVER’S TRAVELS where he’ll play a travel writer who gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Is this just a badly-veiled excuse to pair Black with a cast of little people? [Cinematical]

TOM CRUISE and CHARLIZE THERON are in talks to join forces in an upcoming thriller called THE TOURIST, based on the 2005 French flick by ANTHONY ZIMMER. The exciting part is that Theron will be playing a tough Interpol agent; Cruise her bumbling tourist sexual pawn. He better hope that she doesn’t go all Wuornos on his ass. [Variety]

PETER and BOBBY FARRELLY have written a screenplay for a THREE STOOGES movie that MGM is looking to greenlight which provides the back story for Moe, Larry and Curly. The brothers will direct the film, but there’s no word yet on casting (we’re choosing to ignore that strange bit about RUSSELL CROWE and MEL GIBSON as possibilities). [THR]
