Jack White Is Now Officially the James Franco of Music

2

August 31st, 2011 will go down in history as the day Jack White became the James Franco of music. You see, now that the White Stripes are over and he’s celebrated the end of his marriage to Karen Elson with a big, ol’ divorce party, he’s got time for more ridiculous projects than ever. In addition to his other bands, the Dead Weather and the Raconteurs, the label he founded (Third Man Records), and his prolific producing, White has been making music with such unlikely collaborators as Conan O’Brien and Stephen Colbert. And that was just fine with us. But now he’s gone a bridge too far — kind of like when the also-ubiquitous Franco had “Brad” (as in Renfro) carved into his arm as part of an ill-conceived art project.

What, you ask, could Jack White do that would even compare to pseudo-artistic self-mutilation? Well, friends, he could start producing Insane Clown Posse — and that is exactly what he has done! Seriously. You can see video evidence of the project after the jump. Here is an excerpt from the press release, which also mentions that JEFF the Brotherhood play on the single, presented without comment: “Back in ’82, ahem, 1782, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a piece that’s been left out of the spotlight ever since. The title of the piece is ‘Leck Mich Im Arsch’ or literally translated to English as ‘Lick me in the arse.’ Understandably this piece has figuratively been swept under the rug. So who better to give this piece it’s due respect than the wildly successful, much misunderstood, and divisive Southwest Detroit rappers Insane Clown Posse?”

Trailer: ‘Black Cab Sessions’ to Tour US Cities, Visit Jack White

+

If the idea of a Daytrotter-style acoustic session in the back of a London taxi sounds like your idea of a good time, then you’re probably already familiar with The Black Cab Sessions. This British-based web video series has taken an unlikely idea and turned it into a hit, recording 99 episodes since May 2007 and featuring artists like Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Brian Wilson, and Jens Lekman (who performed, of course, “Black Cab”). In fact, the concept’s been such a success that a TV show is in the works, and it involves the series coming to the US. They’re bringing the taxi to tour Nashville, New Orleans, NYC and various other locations, and artists scheduled to perform include Kyp Malone, Lambchop, and Jack White. It looks way cool — check out the trailer after the jump.

Shepard Fairey’s Tribute to Vintage Album Art

+

America’s most famous street artist, Shepard Fairey, has always been a big music fan. As he mentions on his website, it was album cover art — not graffiti — that first caught his attention. “Album covers conjured a euphoric association with the listening experience. Most of my earliest home-made tee shirts were stencils based on punk album covers,” he writes. Fairey channeled his love of music into REVOLUTIONS, an exhibition of original album covers, which showed in March and April at Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica.

Now, the artist is releasing the works in two 36-print box sets, each with a run of only 150 copies. Dance Floor Riot, composed mostly of revolutionary-tinged punk, New Wave, and funk images, will go on sale here some time between 10am and noon PT (that’s 1-3pm ET) today for $950. Tomorrow, collectors will have a chance to buy the scuzz-rock-and-metal-obsessed Party at the Moontower set (yes, that’s a Dazed and Confused reference) at the same time, place, and price point tomorrow. See some of our favorite works from the box sets, depicting everyone from Joan Jett to Jack White to Little Richard, after the jump.
