Despite a relatively good US run, things have turned out a bit odd for the kids flick Monsters vs Aliens. To begin with, the Dreamworks film didn’t play so well overseas, bringing in just $177.1M in foreign markets, as opposed to the studio’s Madagascar which pulled in $339.1M overseas. Equally odd is the decision to release the film on DVD on the rather inauspicious September 29, well ahead of the Christmas-time boom. Read More »
According to this article in the Telegraph, “Jamie Foxx, the African-American actor, singer and comedian, has been named as a potential contender for the role of Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorcese’s biopic of the entertainer.” Their source: this Daily Express piece which cites an anonymous “well-placed industry insider” (maybe one of Foxx’s agents?) chatting up a storm at Cannes. Songs from the Rat Pack – that was the theme of last night’s Idol, which found most of our top five contestants towing the line between fondly reminiscent and AARP-sponsored karaoke night. Not even an adrenaline shot to the heart (or, in this case, Adam Lambert’s piercing squeals) could have roused us from the deep slumber that took hold after only the first five minutes. We place the blame squarely on AI’s producers for choosing such an overdone, creativity-squelching theme. Burroughs, or Miley Cyrus referencing Radiohead, this collision of worlds has lead to some of time’s most resonant and powerful pieces. In that spirit (and with great verisimilitude of poetic veracity) we at Flavorwire hereby present our resident poets Rocco Gibraltar and Professor Beardly in The Mellow Snifter Bump ‘n Crunk Poetry Hour after the jump. Ideas for future recitations are very, very welcome. Read More »
Disclosure: we’re not big Miley Cyrus fans around here. That said, when stumbled on this story about Jamie Foxx’s anti-Miley tirade on his Sirius radio show, we felt sorry for the little pop tart. Yet again. While Foxx’s take on the Radiohead drama was spot on (“She’s going to ruin Radiohead’s career? The same Radiohead that gets paid a million dollars just to sample their song? That Radiohead?”), MTV reports that he referred to 16-year-old Cyrus as the girl “with all the gums,” and suggested that she grow up, become a lesbian, make a sex tape, and “catch Chlamydia on a bicycle seat.” Read More »
