What’s on at Flavorpill: Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we followed the evolution of the hipster from The Emo to The Meta-Nerd. We watched Hamlet’s third soliloquy in Klingon. We discovered a cat lady term that we dislike even more than cougar. We read that Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air “sux,” but it only made us want to see it even more. We were deeply disappointed in our state. We laughed at a really old picture of Ricky Gervais. We listened to Santigold remix Norah Jones. We felt betrayed by James Lipton’s fake beard. We contemplated how the way we listen to music has changed over the past decade. And finally, we decided to send you out with Frosty the Inappropriate Snowman starring the voice of Neil Patrick Harris in character as Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother.

Today at Flavorpill, we ate some really tasty Lego sushi. We were happy to hear that the Getty Institute will work with Egypt to help conserve and manage the tomb of Tutankhamen — we still need to see him! We discovered the flu shot finder, which will make our moms happy. We watched a man shooting bananas out of his nose. No, that’s not a euphemism for something else. We read Nick Hornby’s take on Levi Johnston’s accidental celebrity. We were depressed by My Morning Jacket’s upcoming appearance on American Dad. We decided that Rihanna and Chris Brown are definitely just toying with us. We enjoyed Jason Reitman’s diagram — and felt kind of embarrassed for our kind. And finally, we wished Sesame Street a very happy 40th birthday. We wish we’d been around back when Cookie Monster smoked a pipe!

This freshly-posted clip from Up in the Air just taught us a new word: faumey (faux + homey). As Vulture reports, the film has won glowing reviews at Telluride — the same festival that launched Slumdog Millionaire‘s slow but steady ascent to the Oscars — and might be the timeliest, most zeitgeist-capturing movie released this awards season.” Reitman’s previous film, Juno, was nominated for four Academy Awards, and the last feature that he both adapted and directed, Thank You for Smoking, won him an Independent Spirit Award. We’ve never seen a conversation about frequent flier miles look as sexually charged as this exchange between George Clooney and Vera Farmiga. What do you think? Does this one have potential? Rate-a-Trailer: Jennifer’s Body

As a huge Diablo Cody fan, I’ve been waiting to see the trailer for this horror flick — which like Juno, is a collaboration with Jason Reitman — for a long time. Which is not to say that I’m giving it a free pass. I got my hands on the script last fall, and I wasn’t so impressed with what I read. As Cody disciples know, her language can be a bit… heavy-handed at times. Plus, I wasn’t sure if I could buy that the same woman who gave us a movie scored by Kimya Dawson could morph into a horror scribe. Read More »
