Watch Fred Armisen Cry in Jimmy Fallon’s New ‘SNL’ Promos

1

We’ll admit that we’re extremely curious about how this week’s special holiday episode of Saturday Night Live will play out. It’s always interesting when a former cast member returns to host the show after striking out on their own, and in Fallon’s case, we’d argue that he has made an even better career for himself as a late night talk host. These promos don’t reveal much about what we’ll see, but they do deliver what has to be the most atonal rendition of “Jingle Bells” that we’ve ever heard. Other than an almost requisite appearance by Barry Gibb and at least one skit where Fallon accidentally breaks character, what are you expecting on Saturday night? Read More »

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we met 100 of the greatest movie villains. We loved this hilarious Thanksgiving-themed spoof on The Hunger Games from McSweeney’s. We heartily agreed with this Thanksgiving Food Pyramid. We found it incredibly endearing that Cameron Crowe made Matt Damon a really sad mixtape to help convince him to take a role in We Bought a Zoo. We couldn’t believe that Jimmy Fallon grounded Questlove for playing “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” during Michele Bachmann’s appearance on his show last night. We decided that this piece on the hushed dangers of startup depression should be required reading for anyone who works on the web. We were thrilled to see this mashup of Calvin and Hobbes and He-Man by illustrator Christopher Tupa. We were hypnotized by this video of flashing faces. We saw what The Walking Dead‘s humans would look like as zombies. And finally, we hoped that this clip is the craziest thing that we see for a long, long time, because it involves the consumption of fluorescent light bulbs.

Video of the Day: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jimmy Fallon Do Karaoke as Axl Rose and David Bowie

+

If you are a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jimmy Fallon, David Bowie, or Axl Rose — and even, maybe, if you’re not — get ready for the video that will make your day. It turns out that Gordon-Levitt, who was a guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday, is a personal friend of the host, and the last time they got together, the guys did some karaoke. Because the experience was too wonderful not to share with the world, they re-enacted it for all of America to watch. First, Fallon performed Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” in the voice of a Let’s Dance-era David Bowie. (In our opinion, it was a real improvement over the original.) Gordon-Levitt responded by showing us what it might look like if Axl Rose covered Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” And finally… no, we’re not going to spoil it. Just watch the video.

1. Last night, Justin Timberlake visited Jimmy Fallon to promote Friends With Benefits, and the pair used it as an excuse to debut the second installment of their incredibly awesome collaboration, “The History of Rap.” Watch them pay homage to House of Pain, 50 Cent, Outkast, and plenty of other hip-hop favorites, here.

2. Discovery Channel is planning to air a new reality series this fall called Weed Wars. The show is set in Oakland’s Harborside Health Center — which is home to the country’s largest medical marijuana distributorship — and will star its owner, pot reform activist Steve DeAngelo. [via Inside TV]

3. Ron Howard and Dustin Lance Black are teaming up on an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book Under the Banner of Heaven, a story about two Mormon brothers who murder their younger brother’s wife and infant daughter because God told them to do it. Considering that Howard just had his Dark Tower project fall through, and Black has written several episodes of Big Love, this sounds like a good fit. [via Slashfilm]

4. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone just signed on for two more seasons with Comedy Central, guaranteeing that you’ll be seeing new episodes of the series through at least 2013, no matter where their success on Broadway takes them. [via Aol.TV]

5. We find this oddly entertaining: The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum, which is currently under construction in Washington, DC, has signed on Clint Eastwood as its Honorary Chairman — and it sounds like they did it because they need more money to finish the project. Watch SNL’s Live-Action Update of The Ambiguously Gay Duo

+

Last night’s Saturday Night Live surprised us with something we hadn’t known we’d always been missing — the return of the classic short “The Ambiguously Gay Duo.” Only this time, with the help of a flesh ray, Ace, Gary and the gang were transformed into human form. Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm appeared as Ace and Gary, and the villains revealed themselves to be Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert (who originally voiced Ace and Gary) along with host Ed Helms. Just like the Ambiguously Gay spots of yore, last night’s half-cartoon, half-live action version was cheap, listless, and mildly offensive. But funny! Watch the video after the jump.

Stephen Colbert Performs an Epic Version of ‘Friday’ on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

4

When Stephen Colbert donated $26,000 of his BFFSM (best friend for six months) Jimmy Fallon’s money to DonorsChoose.org, Fallon couldn’t come up with the cash. Instead, he pledged that if his fans donated the money by, well, Friday, then Colbert would perform Rebecca Black’s epically awful song on his show. Well, the people were up to the challenge – the total donations came out to over $86,000.

So true to his word, last night Stephen Colbert showed up to the Jimmy Fallon set in a tuxedo and sang a brilliant rendition of ‘Friday,’ backed by The Roots. Even with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon heavily auto-tuned, Taylor Hicks with a harmonica, the Knicks City Dancers, and what looked like a yeti and a beekeeper there at the end, the whole thing still ended up being a whole lot less ridiculous and a whole lot more awesome than the original. Sure, everyone seemed to have a little trouble with that extra syllable jammed into “Everybody’s looking forward to the weekend, weekend,” but who can blame them? It’s an awkward song. See the video after the jump!

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds In Our Office

Today at Flavorpill, we bookmarked The Mary Sue, a new site that will cover comics, sci-fi, anime, fandom, and other topics of interest to geek women. We were impressed by the many scarves of Darren Aronofsky. We met the world’s hairiest little girl, an 11-year-old named Supatra Sasuphan. We found it interesting that now that Mr. Potato has lost some weight, he suddenly feels the need to wear pants. We got way too excited over the fancy new design of Heinz’s ketchup packets. We caught up with Dan Sinker, the mystery man who just outed himself as the voice of the @MayorEmanuel Twitter feed. We wondered who if the next flavor of Ben & Jerry’s is going to be named after Jimmy Fallon — we’re rooting for Tracy Morgan instead. We listened to 30-second clips of all of the songs on the Strokes’ upcoming album. And finally, we discovered that Kirk Douglas used to be quite a fox back in the day.
