The 10 Greatest Songs of the ’00s: An Alternative List

28

This week, VH1 released their list of the 100 Greatest Songs of the ’00s, and as you might imagine, we disagree. Unsurprisingly, the list is heavily skewed towards the pop end of the spectrum, but even in that world, we were confused by a few of the tracks that made the top 100. Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass”? That terrible Evanescence song? Creed? Miley Cyrus but no Radiohead? Luckily, VH1′s top 10 is relatively respectable (we totally accept “Crazy in Love” as the best pop song of the decade, at least on this list), but that doesn’t mean we’re satisfied with it. To quell our snobbish balking (and present another view of the last decade), we decided to put together an alternative top 10 songs of the ’00s, limiting ourselves to tracks that didn’t even make VH1′s 100. Click through to see our picks, and feel free to let us know which songs we totally should have chosen in the comments.

JT and Amanda Seyfried Play the Perfect Political Couple

4

We won’t know until the sci-fi thriller In Time hits theaters whether or not Justin Timberlake can carry an action flick on his back or whether or not Amanda Seyfried can play the role of sultry femme fatale. No disrespect to either of them, it’s just Timberlake’s acting chops have been proven in the comedy genre and as a supporting player in dramas, while Seyfried has cornered the market on the awkward, best friend role. If the October cover story in W Magazine doesn’t change that perception initially, at the very least, the duo look the part of the leading man and lady thanks to the work of photographer Michael Thompson.

Regarding the movie’s plot, the interview doesn’t help matters. “It’s set in the future, where money buys you time. My character falls in love with Justin’s character—she wants to give him all the time he needs so he can save the world. It’s very romantic. No matter what’s happening in my life, I can always get lost in the romances of my characters,” Seyfried offered by way of a plot description. Click through to check out the images, and let us know in the comments what you think of their take on the perfect political couple.

The 10 Most Shocking Facts About This Year’s College Freshmen

2

In an office like ours, pop culture references come up pretty frequently, and it’s always to surprising to see what a difference even a few years in age can make between someone knowing exactly what you’re talking about, and giving you a blank, slightly pitying stare. The chasm is even greater between kids who were born 18 years ago and those of us who are old enough to have been their babysitters. The latest installment of “The Mindset List,” an annual compilation of the cultural touchstones of incoming freshmen at Wisconsin’s Beloit College, really drives this point home. We’ve pulled out some of the most interesting bits from this year’s findings after the jump.

Welcome to “Trailer Park,” our regular Friday feature where we collect the week’s new trailers all in one place and do a little “judging a book by its cover,” ranking them from worst to best and taking our best guess at what they may be hiding. This week, we’ve got ten new ones — taken as a group, a rather eclectic mix of styles and subjects indicating that the summer movie season is drawing to a close. Check ‘em all out after the jump.

The Morning’s Top 5 Pop Culture Stories

1. Last night, Justin Timberlake visited Jimmy Fallon to promote Friends With Benefits, and the pair used it as an excuse to debut the second installment of their incredibly awesome collaboration, “The History of Rap.” Watch them pay homage to House of Pain, 50 Cent, Outkast, and plenty of other hip-hop favorites, here.

2. Discovery Channel is planning to air a new reality series this fall called Weed Wars. The show is set in Oakland’s Harborside Health Center — which is home to the country’s largest medical marijuana distributorship — and will star its owner, pot reform activist Steve DeAngelo. [via Inside TV]

3. Ron Howard and Dustin Lance Black are teaming up on an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book Under the Banner of Heaven, a story about two Mormon brothers who murder their younger brother’s wife and infant daughter because God told them to do it. Considering that Howard just had his Dark Tower project fall through, and Black has written several episodes of Big Love, this sounds like a good fit. [via Slashfilm]

4. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone just signed on for two more seasons with Comedy Central, guaranteeing that you’ll be seeing new episodes of the series through at least 2013, no matter where their success on Broadway takes them. [via Aol.TV]

5. We find this oddly entertaining: The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum, which is currently under construction in Washington, DC, has signed on Clint Eastwood as its Honorary Chairman — and it sounds like they did it because they need more money to finish the project. 1. It turns out that Justin Timberlake now has a minor stake in MySpace thanks to that $35 million deal that went down yesterday. From his official statement: “Art is inspired by people and vice versa, so there’s a natural social component to entertainment. I’m excited to help revitalize Myspace by using its social media platform to bring artists and fans together in one community.” [via THR]

2. Diablo Cody will make her directing debut with Lamb of God, a comedy that’s based on a screenplay that she wrote about a conservative woman who loses her religion after a plane crash and decides to live the life of a sinner in Las Vegas, only to rediscover her faith. [via Deadline]

3. Remember Puck from The Real World? Of course you do, he was horrible! The LA Times reports that he remains in police custody after being arrested and charged in a domestic violence case earlier this week. Unfortunately, this is not the reality star’s first brush with the law; he has previously been charged with both battery and a DUI.

4. A new monthly comic book based on George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones is due out in September from Bantam. The title will be illustrated by Tommy Patterson and scripted by Daniel Abraham (The Long Price Quartet). [via The Beat]

5. It now sounds like the long-awaited Jay-Z/Kanye West collaboration Watch the Throne won’t be released on July 4th, as had previously been rumored. Even though the album has been completed, a source reports that Kanye still needs to add “his last little pizazz.” [via Vulture]

What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we wished that we could move into one of these incredible looking treehouses for grownups. We found out that The Daily had it wrong when they said that Dave Chappelle was plotting a return to TV. We were surprised to hear that Rob McElhenney, who plays Mac on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, will be 50 pounds heavier when the show returns next fall because he thinks it will make his character funnier. We were excited to hear that Blair Underwood will be making his Broadway debut in an adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire next spring. We liked the idea of a phone that would automatically turn off when you’re at the movies. We watched Matt & Kim run around the streets of New York City in their new “Block After Block” music video. We weren’t sure who to root for in this faceoff between the old Justin Timberlake and the current Justin Timberlake. We wished that we’d been there in person to see the Flaming Lips and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros play “Do You Realize??” at sunrise in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. And finally, we loved BroBible’s video roundup of the best TV dads through the decades. Cliff Huxtable FTW!

Watch Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and Andy Samberg In a ’3-Way’

3

Last night on SNL, Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake reprised their vinyl-clad 90′s bro characters (of ‘Dick in a Box’ and ‘Motherlover’ fame) for a new Digital Short with Lady Gaga entitled “3-Way (The Golden Rule)”. The titular golden rule, of course, being “it’s not gay when it’s in a three way.” Truer words have never been spoken. We’re digging it, but nothing can touch ‘Dick in a Box’ for us – even dual helicoptering. Is this edition of JT and Samberg’s musical partnership the best of the trio or do you think it falls flat? Let us know in the comments!

A Sneak Peek at This Week’s ‘SNL Digital Short’

+

As we mentioned yesterday, our hopes are high for this weekend’s season finale of Saturday Night Live. Between Justin Timberlake as the show’s host, and Lady Gaga as its musical guest, we figured that something interesting had to happen. Now, thanks to TMZ, we have confirmation of this fact: a preview of this week’s Digital Short. Will it be more of a “Motherlover” (which was funny) or a “Dick in the Box” (which changed our world)? We have no idea. Given that the lovely Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson were also spotted filming, it will probably be more of the former, but we’ll definitely be tuning in to find out! Attention ‘SNL’ Fans: Play Stefon Mad Libs

2

It has been a really rough season for Saturday Night Live, and from where we’re sitting, there has only been one silver lining — the introduction of Bill Hader’s over-the-top club kid character, Stefon. Like our friends over at Crushable, he’s our favorite thing on SNL (particularly when his ridiculous lines cause Hader to break character); that’s why we’re so excited that they’ve created some Stefon-themed Mad Libs in honor of this weekend’s Justin Timberlake-hosted season finale (which, judging by the promos, is actually going to be funny!). Click through fill in the blanks on our favorite one now, and head over to Crushable to collect ‘em all.
