What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds In Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we ogled this 150-carat, all-diamond ring (yes, even the band). We wondered if this Justin Bieber Keytar ad was real, or just a living nightmare. We watched John Stamos kiss a dude for charity. We went disco dancing with Rita Hayworth. We were hypnotized by this turntable drawing machine. We were wowed by a crazy digital manipulation of one man’s face. We got up close and personal with all the nipples at The Met. We wanted to buy these awesome, limited edition posters of Metropolis, Double Indemnity, and Touch of Evil. We wondered what questions you had about MDNA for Madonna’s one day only Twitter appearance. We drank Coke’s tribute to fashion. We thought wolf kisses looked painful, but sweet. And finally, we found out what happens to film villains when they retire. At least The Shining twins have stayed close after all these years.

Whether or not it’s true, we’ve decided to take the opportunity to look back at the weirdest and most unlikely couples in the music industry. Gypsy Wagons: Romantic, Adventurous, and Liberating Design

20

Sometimes we just need to get away from it all. Away from the computer. Away from the city. Away from modern life as we know it. Enter our newest tiny house obsession: the gypsy caravan. Like so many things that originated in the French countryside, it’s the perfect design solution for the urban doldrums. Complete with birdcages, crocheted curtains, wood-fired stoves and Art Nouveau details, these tiny homes on wheels will have you contemplating trading in your skinny jeans for a prairie skirt and a violin.

Researching exactly how we’re going to work one of these colorful conduits to a more romantic life into our postmodern existence, we came across the Gypsy Caravan Company headquartered in rural England. The founders explain that these enchanting mobile dwellings “can be used as a spare bedroom, a garden study, a hobby room, an artist’s studio, a writer’s retreat, a wildlife hide, a child’s gypsy caravan playhouse, a focal point for camp fires or barbecues, a romantic hideaway or simply somewhere to take a glass of wine and a good book.” Fun fact: Roald Dahl, Madonna, Billy Connolly and the Duchess of Bedfordshire have all been proud owners of one of these inspiring little hide-aways.

Click through to see some of the most whimsical and inspiring bohemian wagons out there today. Let us know in the comments if you could trade in your urban existence for a meadow hopping life in one of these romantic gems.

The Fug Report: Highs and Lows from the Week in Fashion

+

Editor’s note: Welcome to The Fug Report! Each week our fashion blogger friends Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, the sartorial geniuses behind Go Fug Yourself, will feature some of the most memorable looks of the week in this space. We hope you enjoy it!

This week on Go Fug Yourself, we kicked off the 4th Annual Fug Madness, in which we all pour over the worst celeb fashion of the last year to determine who looked the worst. Come on by and vote! When not arguing about whether Katy Perry looked worse than Kourtney Kardashian, for example, we also wondered what happened to Ashley Judd’s face, who was out to ruin Shailene Woodley, and why Susan Sarandon was making appearances in her underwear. We were concerned about Nicole Richie (and not just because Fashion Star looks so terrible), and decided that Elizabeth Banks was a total dish. We also got all up in the grill of the Hunger Games premiere, and worried that Miley Cyrus perhaps confused it with her belly-dancing class. She wouldn’t be the — actually, yes. She would be the first.

10 of Art History’s Most Controversial Photographers [NSFW]

30

In 1971 Norman Mailer said that “giving a camera to Diane Arbus is like putting a live grenade in the hands of a child.” Lo and behold: Child With Hand Grenade. Even before her suicide that year, Arbus’ magnificent body of work evoked criticism and suspicion of exploitation. She was drawn to the so-called deviants, outsiders, marginalized people, glamorous transvestites, graceful giants, disturbed-looking children, circus performers and of course, twins and subjects with other birth eccentricities. Had she lived, Arbus would have been 89 years old today. In tribute, we’d like to present you with this brief survey of some of the most controversial photographers, contemporary and of recent yesteryear.

Uncannily Realistic Repainted Celebrity Dolls

2

Just about every major movie that comes out these days — and not just the family fare — ends up producing some kind of commemorative doll. Same with any platinum-selling pop star. But have you ever noticed how little these Barbie-like creations tend to resemble their subjects? Well, so has Noel Cruz, an artist who repaints the dolls so that they uncannily recreate the faces of celebrities and their characters. See a perfectly preserved mid-’80s Madonna, Angelina Jolie at her steamiest, and even Harry Potter, after the jump. Then, make sure you visit Cruz’s website to check out more of his work.

2. This can’t be good: series creator Alan Ball has confirmed that he’s stepping down from his duties as True Blood’s showrunner if the show returns for another season. “Because of the fantastic cast, writers, producers and crew, with whom I have been lucky enough to work these past five years,” he said in a statement, “I know I could step back and the show will continue to thrive as I look forward to new and exciting ventures.” [via Inside TV]

3. Lucy Liu has been cast as a female Watson in CBS’s Elementary, a modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes that will star Jonny Lee Miller. As much as we love Liu, what are the chances that this version can hold a candle to the BBC one? Also, what does this mean for her role on Southland? [via Vulture]

4. “Clearly her label was trying to avoid legal action surrounding the song. But ‘Girl Gone Wild’ is still infringement as far as the law is concerned, and we have been in touch with Madonna’s people in an effort to resolve the issue.” — Apparently Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis is not happy about the title of Madonna’s new single, which we reviewed here yesterday. Meanwhile, Madge says that she doesn’t even know who he is.

Madonna’s “Girls Gone Wild” Induces Existential Dread, Cultural Bewilderment

Occasionally, a record will come into the Flavorpill office that’s so jaw-droppingly abysmal that it stops the entire room, a record that leaves everyone starting at the stereo and mouthing the words: “What fresh hell is this?” The last time this happened it was Chris Cornell’s Scream, but we have a new contender: the new Madonna single, which debuted in full on Vevo this morning and has since had this writer cowering in the corner and contemplating actual self-harm.

Video of the Day: Brazilian Drag Queens Recreate Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

+

Madonna and drag queens have had a symbiotic relationship since the “Like a Virgin” era, so it’s no surprise that a troupe of Brazilian cross-dressers have re-enacted Madge’s much-discussed Super Bowl halftime show. In fact, if we weren’t so impressed with all the choreography they’ve managed to learn, we’d wonder why it’s taken them so long. The 13-minute performance is nothing short of fantastic, although we do have one small gripe: Couldn’t the queens have done something a little bit more fun with M.I.A.’s middle-finger moment? Watch and relive, after the jump.

Gay Best Friends in Pop Culture Who Need Better Friends

4

Despite some encouraging recent advances, gay and lesbian characters remain underrepresented in mainstream media, and the ones who do appear tend to have it pretty rough. Even in 2012, many still get assigned to the role of “Gay Best Friend Who Advises and Comforts the Straight Female Lead,” where they’re very clever and very supportive and don’t get to have personal lives of their own. The lesbians, meanwhile, always seem to be the characters that really terrible things happen to all the time. Here’s a list of some of queer best friends in pop culture who need to make some better friends. If you’ve got any you’d like to share, list them in the comments!
