These days, loving fashion is as much a requisite of celebrity culture as lending your face to a charity, or dodging claims of plastic surgery. Whilst we applaud a well-dressed star, we get somewhat irate when some of them take it too far, believing that their acquiescence to the clutches of a stylist translates as raw artistic talent in the fashion business. What’s worse, many design houses are willing to not only put up with this charade but endorse it, believing that a collaboration with Mischa Barton/Jessica Simpson/Miley Cyrus (who all have careers that, to outsiders like us, have nothing to do with fashion) will attract highly-desired publicity or a new demographic to a brand. If you’ve so much as had your pinkie finger on the fashion pulse over the last few years, you’ve noticed the increasing numbers of children being dressed as little adults. Last year alone Chloe, Acne, and Marc Jacobs all launched children’s wear lines, and Burberry even opened a stand-alone children’s wear store in posh Notting Hill. Over the weekend Flavorpill took a trip to the Met to check out the much-hyped The Model as Muse exhibit currently on view, which is being sponsored by Marc Jacobs in partnership with Conde Nast. The show is a tribute not just to iconic fashion photography, which has made the glossy magazines of today the titans they have become, but also the models who inspired these images. From the timeless elegance of Richard Avedon’s editorial work with Dorian Leigh, to the almost mythical “Trinity” of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell, the influence of the supermodel as a source of inspiration is doubtless. The blood-bath clearance sales post holidays were said to be a “once in a lifetime event,” with rumors of bargain bins filled to the brim with last season Marc Jacobs hand bags going for Marc by Marc prices.
