John Krasinski’s adaptation of the wonderful David Foster Wallace’s short story collection Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is out in theaters. Well, theater really, since in New York it’s still playing exclusively at the IFC Center. But no matter. The real story blowing up the blogs is that Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard makes his acting debut in the film, looking like a cute potato as always.

Despite a relatively good US run, things have turned out a bit odd for the kids flick Monsters vs Aliens. To begin with, the Dreamworks film didn’t play so well overseas, bringing in just $177.1M in foreign markets, as opposed to the studio’s Madagascar which pulled in $339.1M overseas. Equally odd is the decision to release the film on DVD on the rather inauspicious September 29, well ahead of the Christmas-time boom. Read More »
San Diego Comic-Con — the world’s largest comic book convention and one of the only places where a homemade superhero costume will help you fit in — opens tonight. A lot of people have been making a big to-do about the fact that there will be girls there. Others have made a to-do about the to-do. We don’t really know what to think, but we’re already tired of hearing about New Moon. Read More »
It’s a widely acknowledged fact that most games that created as a promotional tie-in to movies inherently suck. Case in point: behold the Twilight Board Game*. The fact that such things exist is infuriating enough, but worse, they manipulate poor fans who are tricked by their love of a movie into buying a really crappy game. After the jump our list of the worst offenders in this particular category, along with the few, proud games who don’t shame their source material. Read More »
Do we even have to say it? Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made huge, heaping, robot-turned-dump-truck-loads of money this weekend and made Michael Bay a very happy man. Despite claims of racism, the movie raked in $112M, which, added to the $89.2M it made earlier in the week, gave it the second largest five day opening of all time — right behind The Dark Knight. And to top it off, assuming that the movie passes the $300m mark — and unless all of the copies of it spontaneously explode, it will — Shia LaBeouf will become the first star ever to appear in $300M films three summers in a row. Not bad for a guy who’s in love with his mother. Read More »
Obviously good press makes all the difference, as last weekend’s top two films (The Hangover and UP) hung onto their top spots with little to no competition from newcomers The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and the dismally-performing Eddie Murphy kid’s flick Imagine That (why, Eddie?). Read More »
Whenever we hear the word “DeLorean”, our minds automatically turn to thoughts of gunning it to 88 mph and zooming into history with a fiery blaze. But apparently for filmmakers, hearing “DeLorean” makes them think classic biopic. At least that’s the way it seems considering that there are currently three movies about the automaker known as the “Detroit dream merchant” in the works. Get the who-what-why after the jump. I’d like to expand on a story we already told you earlier this morning: Winona Ryder’s confirmation that there will be a sequel to ’80s cult classic Heathers. As a bona fide Heather (check the byline) who has been known to hang out with other Heathers, I feel that I am uniquely suited to provide commentary on Heathers 2: Electric Boogaloo (working title). Memorial Day Weekend is over, it’s officially okay to wear white. Yay! Unfortunately, most of this summer’s blockbusters have come out already, leaving us little to look forward to at the movies. Boo! Four biggies, including Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Angels & Demons, and Star Trek: The IMAX Experience (which was AMAZING) have already been released, and, although franchise faves Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are yet to come, we think this summer’s biggest success story might come in the form of a smaller film (at least relatively speaking… think of those super-sized budgets).
