Tumblr We Like: Every Day Posters for Every Day Events

1

A poster — or at least the creation of one — is usually a special occasion affair. Generally, posters announce events, promote bands, or declare propaganda with authoritative and colorful voices, and maybe some pictures thrown in there for good measure. However, since all humans are pretty much egotistical creatures of habit, it seems like it might be nice to have a few posters declaring the minutiae of our daily lives. Enter Every Day Posters Every Day, which aims to provide us with posters that give our every day activities the kind of importance they really deserve. You can even submit your own, if you feel that your personal favorite daily chore has not been properly represented. Click through for some of our favorites from the tumblr, and visit EDPED for many more.

Design Porn: Affordable Art for Japan Relief

10

In the wake of last week’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan, plenty of people are coming up with creative ways to fund raise for relief efforts. One trend that we’ve noticed: a number of graphic designers and artists have released limited-edition artwork inspired by the crisis, making the idea of donating even more of a no brainer. All of the profits from the posters and prints after the jump will go to various charitable organizations helping out in Japan; if you’ve spotted something that we’ve missed, be sure to leave a link to it in the comments.

Wanted: Posters Re-Envisioning Famous Rides as Vans

6

Do you ever wonder why more onscreen heroes don’t pull up in vans? What if the oversized automobile had been more ubiquitous in pop culture? Artist Brandon Ortwein gives us one answer with It Would Have Been Cooler as a Van, a poster series that re-envisions famous cinematic vehicles — from Pee-wee Herman’s bike to Doc’s DeLorean — as vans. We imagine Matt Foley, an early adopter of the van trend, would be proud.

Wanted: Posters of Famous Writers’ Houses

1

To celebrate the launch of the new website Writers Houses, Aislinn Forbes has created a series of four literary posters, each featuring a famous writer’s home and address. While we’re partial to Flannery O’Connor’s digs (a good woman’s house is hard to find), you can also nab illustrations of the home of Edward Gorey, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe. Click through to view them all, and then grab one of these limited-edition prints for $20 a pop, or $75 for a 4-pack here.

Lost Goes Minimalist

7

No joke: we love minimalist posters. But a minimalist take on Lost, with its six seasons, ridiculous plot twists, and roughly 30 main characters, is no easy feat. However, the cult of Lost breeds superfans, among which Georgia-based artist Gideon Slife is no exception. He decided to create a poster for every, single, episode, starting with the pilot from 2004. The posters feature a muted color palette and a pithy phrase summarizing the installment. So far, Slife is up to his 78th poster (that’s halfway through the fourth season, for the few undevoted Losters out there), and is planning to work his way up to the 121st poster for the series finale on May 23rd. Check our some of our favorite graphic images and see if you can pin each one to its proper season.

Picture of the Day: Retro-Tinted Movie Illustrations

+

movieposters

Marketing types might disagree, but we’re pretty sick of same old, same old when it comes to movie posters: A-lister names above the title, closeup on stars’ faces, airbrushed limbs, bo-ring. So we’re digging this roundup of illustrated movie posters, both vintage and modern. Maybe it’s the typeface, maybe it’s the coloration, maybe it’s the mystery. Take a look at a few more examples, from illustrators like Brandon Schaefer (work pictured above) and Tom Whalen, after the jump. Read More »

OMG, They Released FIVE New Harry Potter Posters!!!

1

OK, it’s honesty time everyone: between recording Filipino cover bands, taking DJ lessons from the best in the biz, courting evil leather-jacket lovers, and arguing the finer points of politics, I’ve been known to roll with a wily band of teenage wizards. Come on man, Harry Potter fans can be credible (The Beard is really just what happens when I drink Polyjuice Potion). And it’s not like I know where to find Snape slash fiction [NSFW] or anything.

What I do know is that Warner Brother’s decision to bump the Half-Blood Prince to summer was an abomination (it was ready in October!). Of course, now that it’s coming close (27 days!), I can’t help but be excited. After the jump, a big win for Potter fans: five recently released movie posters (three of which elude to the sexual tension undoubtedly fueling the film).
