What’s On at Flavorpill: The Links That Made the Rounds in Our Office

+

Today at Flavorpill, we wished that we had a job that required more pretty pencils. We celebrated the sartorial greatness that is Forever 21. We listened to Lil’ Kim diss Nicki Monaj in a track entitled “Black Friday.” We made a mental note to DVR Bob’s Burgers, a new animated series featuring two of our favorite comedians, Eugene Mirman and Kristen Schaal. We wondered if the Google/Groupon rumors were true. We learned that the Strokes scrapped the original studio recording of songs for their upcoming album. We added some interesting new blogs to our RSS readers. We discovered that back in 1957, Donald Duck co-hosted the Oscars. We watched the Diplo-directed clip for Robyn’s “Dancehall Queen.” We sorted famous film and TV characters into Hogwarts houses and decided that we’d definitely want to be in Ravenclaw with Liz Lemon. And finally, we wanted to go for a ride in one of the 100 best movie spaceships — specifically Discovery One from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Lady Gaga Takes Lollapalooza 2010: Summer Festivals Join 21st Century

5

For the past several years, summer music mega-fest lineups have been cause for concern. Just last year, Lollapalooza headliners included Depeche Mode, Tool, Jane’s Addiction, and Lou Reed. Paul McCartney, Morrissey, The Cure, and My Bloody Valentine were among the bold-face names at the generally forward-thinking Coachella. Meanwhile, at Bonnaroo, things looked even bleaker: Bruce Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and Phish (playing not one but two sets!) took the top spots. What was this, I Love the ’90s (and the ’80s… and the ’70s… and the ’60s)?

Finally, that all seems to be changing. In a little over a week, fans at Coachella will look forward to headlining performances by Jay-Z, Gorillaz, and Muse. With today’s announcement of the Lollapalooza 2010 lineup, it looks like summer music festivals may finally have entered the 21st century.

Flying the Coop: An Indie Solo Projects Mix

+

Musicians are by no means monogamous. Often their loyalty is not to the single entity of a band, but rather to the grander scheme of the things, the music itself. Take Gorillaz (by way of Blur) frontman Damon Albarn, who just announced that he’s going solo again on the side under the guise of Prince Barry. Or Thom Yorke branching out from Radiohead with his once anonymous band who we now know as Atoms for Peace. After the jump, we’ve compiled a playlist of our favorite tracks from some recent indie side projects. As always, leave a comment and let us know who we left out.

Can You Recognize Who Performed on Gossip Girl?

+

We couldn’t. A few hints: His name starts with A and ends with T. His band hit it big during the garage-rock resurgence of 2001. He is notable for his (former) afro, which might explain why we were in the dark. The answer and some video, in case you missed his cameo, after the jump!

Julian Casablancas Dances for Conan

4

Last night on The Tonight Show, Julian Casablancas performed “11th Dimension,” a track from his upcoming solo album Phrazes for the Young. He also did some awesome dance moves, presumably to make up for the lack of the Strokes behind him — though we have to admit he’s always been something of a ham onstage. Here we identify and rate the different 10 moves; watch the video and let us know your own thoughts.
