The crayon made its debut in 1903 — before that kids used colored clay or chalk. Photographer Christian Montone has an expansive Flickr collection of vintage crayons and other forgotten children’s art supplies. His photographs give insight into a pre-Crayola dominated world, where crayon brands such as Blendwel and Tom Sawyer still existed. Even if you don’t know these names, clicking through will make you feel like a kid again; according to Smithsonian Magazine, a recent Yale University study ranked crayons as on of the most recognizable scents to American adults.
