Confronting the blurred lines of reality that flourish in a world of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and text messages, Catfish investigates online relationships with humor, caution, and tenderness.
The documentary follows NYC photographer Yaniv “Nev” Schulman, whose odyssey begins with a Facebook message from an unknown eight-year-old girl in Michigan named Abby. Over the following eight months, filmmakers Ariel Schulman (Nev’s brother) and Henry Joost document his online activities as he gets acquainted with Abby’s entire family, eventually falling in love with her older sister, Megan. However, everything changes when the trio decides to meet Megan in person.
