Fans of 1993’s Groundhog Day may have realized, during Bill Murray’s darker moments, that living one day over and over can be liberating but is ultimately a terrifying curse. This existential situation is what director Carl Bessai seems to be getting at with Repeaters . The plot follows three rehab patients — Kyle (Dustin Milligan), Sonia (Amanda Crew), and Weeks (Richard de Klerk) — who are given one day to make amends with their troubled families. Kyle attempts to reconnect with his sister, Sonia avoids her sick dad (who then dies), and Weeks visits his violent dad in prison. The trio find themselves stuck living this terrible day over and over again and while it seems they’ll temporarily find relief in living violently and without consequence, their isolation will certainly take its toll eventually.

The film will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13. [io9]
