The black-clad, anarchist cheerleaders. The moshing high schoolers. That janitor. The extras in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video probably had no idea that they were going to appear in one of the most influential music videos of all time. All they did was show up at a studio in Culver City, CA on August 17th, 1991, in response to a flyer inviting 18-to-25-year-olds to “adapt a high-school personna [sic], i.e. preppy, punk, nerd, jock.” Take a gander at that fateful ad after the jump.
