Attention design geeks: Gary Hustwit, aka the director of Helvetica (which looked at the world of typography) and Objectified (which explored our relationship with manufactured products), has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help complete his latest project, Urbanized. As the final documentary in what he calls his “design trilogy,” the film focuses on the design of cities, and features interviews with some of the world’s leading architects, urban planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers.
“I’ve teamed up once again with cinematographer Luke Geissbuhler, and we’ve been traveling around the world interviewing people and filming specific urban design projects that represent the issues facing cities today,” writes Hustwit. “The world’s population is in the midst of a massive migration to urban areas, and the design solutions our cities implement in the next 20 years will be critical.”
So where do you come in? Hustwit and his team have already spent over a year working on the movie, but they have several more filming trips they’d like to take before it’s finished. And then there will be expensive post-production tasks like sound editing, color correction, and other technical stuff to worry about. As Urbanized is a totally independent project, there’s no real funding for the work in progress outside of the revenue from the previous two films.
