Oh boy. We already have so many conflicting feelings about Jared Leto. He was every girl’s (and many guys’) high-school crush, back in his Jordan Catalano days. A few years after that, he kind of fell off the radar. But recently, his band that everyone used to joke about, 30 Seconds to Mars, has become legitimately, horrifyingly popular — to say nothing of the unfortunate hair choices that seem to define his new, rock-star persona.
So, we’re feeling pretty ambivalent about this clip Leto posted on his website yesterday, the 17th anniversary of Cobain’s death. It shows the actor/musician dressed up as Cobain, performing “Pennyroyal Tea” and a few seconds of “Rape Me,” as well as wandering around outdoors with a flannel shirt tied around his waist. Leto explains that he shot the clip when he heard a film was being made about Cobain’s life (probably, from the looks of it, Gus Van Sant’s Last Days) but never submitted it for consideration. Of the late legend, Leto writes, “He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that.” Thoughts?
