The folks at Very Small Array have put together a fascinating graph of critics’ reviews of each year’s 10 top-grossing films, from 1950-2010. Although scores (based on Rotten Tomatoes) vary widely from year to year, the Tomatometer ratings certainly trend downward over time. Of course, as commenters on the initial post have pointed out, this conclusion is a bit deceptive: Rotten Tomatoes has only been around since 1999, so reviews of earlier films weren’t current with their initial release.
