Olly Moss’ Pop Culture-Inspired Paper Cut Outs

Share:

For the past six months, UK-based artist Olly Moss has been busy at work making Victorian silhouettes of his favorite pop culture icons for his first solo art show at the Melrose location of LA’s Gallery 1988. But don’t be surprised if his name already sounds familiar to you. As the illustrator behind the viral fan posters for several movies and TV shows, he has quickly established himself as one of the leaders of the current pop culture art movement.

“It’s kind of a pretentious justification but if you look at classic art, a lot of it is religious and mythic iconography and symbolism,” Moss explained to Slashfilm, when asked about his choice of subject matter. “Now a days it’s a similar thing. It’s just instead of having Hercules, Athena, and Apollo, it’s Darth Vader and Optimus Prime. More stuff that you recognize, stuff that you have an instant connection with, stuff that stands for the same concepts.” Click through to preview a sampling of art from the show.
