The 'Party Down' Movie: Should You Get Your Hopes Up?

Ever since Starz canceled Party Down last June there have been rumors circulating that the comedy would find new life on the big screen. Now, thanks to some comments made by Rob Thomas at a Q&A held at the Alamo Drafthouse’s Ultimate Party Down Marathon this past weekend, those whispers have reached a fever pitch. Here’s exactly what he said: “People are talking to us about doing a Party Down movie. We are pretty far down the deal-making process with that, so we’re hopeful that there will be a Party Down movie. Ideally, if it works out we could be shooting in television hiatus time next spring. Hopefully that deal will close, and we’ll all tweet about it when it does.”

So there’s that. But as Russ Fischer at Slashfilm points out, Thomas talked a big game about a movie version of his other cult hit, Veronica Mars, and that has yet to come even close to happening. There’s also this to consider: the series finale of Party Down only attracted 74,000 viewers, with a 0.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Sure, these numbers are easy to explain (do you know anyone who subscribes to Starz?), but that’s not exactly the kind of thing that would excite a film studio exec. In other words, we’re not holding our breath here — much like the Arrested Development movie, we fear this is a project that will be teasing us for years to come. What do you think?
