Dorothy at Very Small Array has created another intriguing movie infographic. The graph above shows the median Rotten Tomatoes rating for the ten highest-grossing films of each year from 1924-2010 by genre. In effect, she’s determined which genre critics tend to like the best. And the winner, somewhat surprisingly, is Westerns, beating out the lowest-rated set, action movies, by a sizable 20 percentage points. Incidentally, dramas, which we’d think of as your standard, critically acclaimed, Oscar-bait fare, come in around the middle of the pack, just below horror flicks. Click over to Very Small Array to see the rest of the graphic, which includes a chart showing the median length for each genre’s most popular films.
