Watch Floppy Disk Drives Play the ‘Star Wars’ Theme

Share:

Someone hacked a few floppy drives and instead of collecting dust, they now play Star Wars’ “Imperial March”. Apparently the sound occurs when the drive’s magnetic head is moved by a stepper motor. “To make a specific sound, [the] head must be moved with [the] appropriate frequency … an ATMega microcontroller is generating those frequencies and it makes the drives play music,” says Silent, who is the conductor behind the video we’ve shared after the jump. He explains how to do the whole thing on his blog, the instructions of which will sound like Martian to you if you’re not very tech-savvy. Take a listen.
