Photographing the Generational Divide

We cannot elude the power of genetics — especially not when it comes to what we look like. By shooting mother/daughter and father/son pairs in a series of minimalist, close-up portraits, German photographer Frauke Thielking makes this point abundantly clear, while subtly illustrating the passage of time. It’s not that each couple creates a perfect (if slightly aged) mirror image — far from it, in fact. But the duos are all visually linked by a shared trait, whether it’s a distinctive nose, similarly-shaped eyes, or the same Mona Lisa-smile. The concept is simple, but one that we think really works.
