Frank Oz Thinks New Muppets Movie Disrespects Characters

Videogum points us to a lengthy and eyebrow-raising Hollywood Reporter piece that chronicles the backlash against Jason Segel and director James Bobin’s forthcoming Disney movie The Muppets among Muppets “purists.” Accusations are flying that the pair “didn’t have a complete understanding of the Muppets characters or were willing to sacrifice the characters’ integrity to land a joke” — and some of the biggest burns come straight out of the mouth of Miss Piggy. Frank Oz, the famous voice actor who’s best known for portraying her (as well as Fozzie Bear, Cookie Monster, Yoda, and many more), didn’t mince words in an interview with Metro: “I wasn’t happy with the script,” he told the British paper. “I don’t think they respected the characters. But I don’t want to go on about it like a sourpuss and hurt the movie.” Other Jim Henson vets have complained about too many cheap gags (two words: “fart shoes”), and that a Henson-era film would never have depicted the Muppets breaking up over the characters’ jealousy towards Kermit. If you’re a Muppets fan, the entire piece is worth a read.
