Diablo Cody Says ‘Sweet Valley High’ Movie Is “Close to Reality”

For over two years now, Diablo Cody has been involved in a big-screen adaptation of Francine Pascal’s beloved Sweet Valley High series. And just as we were about to give up hope of it ever happening, Cody has given indieWIRE a promising update: “That is moving forward,” Cody told the site. “It’s closer to reality than ever but I can’t freely talk about it.” Along with revealing that it’s “inexorably linked” to her forthcoming film, Young Adult, she said, “I want [Sweet Valley High] to be wonderfully nostalgic… I want it to be to the ’80s what American Graffiti was to the [early] ’60s. I want it to be looking back on a really cool time and enjoying yourself and I want it to be glamorous and colorful and bubblegum and a feast for the senses.” We don’t think we could possibly be more excited, frankly — we loved the books as kids because they were an outlandish fantasy, and Cody is clearly on the same page. At the very least, the movie has to be better than Pascal’s own critically savaged SVH update, Sweet Valley Confidential . [via The Hairpin]
