We look forward to seeing how Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan handles the West Memphis Three story that’s being adapted from investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s book The Devil’s Knot. The thoughtful and daring director who wrapped up Chloe in 2009 has cast Legally Blonde actress Reese Witherspoon in his upcoming drama as Pam Hobbs — “the mother of one of the murder victims, who initially believes the trio murdered her son, but is eventually persuaded the three suspects are innocent and wrongly accused.”
The group was recently released from prison after an 18-year sentence, serving time for the suspected murder of three Arkansas boys. Their story has been the subject of numerous impassioned documentaries (Paradise Lost) and fund raising efforts. Following their newfound freedom in August, the men became Hollywood’s latest hot commodity.
Egoyan is known for his intense character-driven dramas, which makes him more than capable of handling Devil’s Knot — but what do you make of Reese? She’s the first cast, and most likely not the headliner, but the actress is best known for her romantic comedy roles. We did see her more serious side in Water for Elephants, though.
