The last time we heard from Maya Arulpragasam, we’ll admit we were getting sick of her — the controversy, the grating album with the untypeable title, the truffle fries. Now, perhaps since we’ve spent the entire past week arguing about Lana Del Rey, we’re actually kind of relieved to have a different polarizing indie/pop star to discuss. And you know what? Maybe we can blame LDR’s half-dead vocals for this, too, but the spirited first release from M.I.A.’s fourth album has us feeling optimistic. “Bad Girls” is a stomping, swaggering, bhangra-infected anthem for ladies who might just “blow you with a bang,” featuring a few mid-song slow-downs that suggest Maya’s not taking herself or this “Paper Planes”-style bravado too seriously.
