Revolting babies. Gas-huffing sadists. The Black Lodge. Marilyn Manson. The perverse brain of David Lynch has never lacked for unexpected methods of creeping us out. But apparently he doesn’t need a great, weird idea to terrify — the Lynch-directed 1991 PSA below, spotted by Gothamist, proves he can even make littering eerie. Using an ominous soundtrack, dramatic slow motion, and some fairly unpleasant close-ups of rats, the filmmaker scared the New Yorkers of 20 years go into using trash bins… or maybe just gave them nightmares.
