Rate-a-Trailer: Coco Before Chanel

When we saw the foreign trailer for Amelie pixie Audrey Tautou’s latest project, Coco Avant Chanel, we were intrigued, despite not understanding a word of it. Thankfully, the English trailer is finally out, and we can now begin to squeal in earnest. Check out the trailer, and our assessment, after the jump.

In the film, Audrey Tautou plays an adorable French gamine, the perfect role for an actress who’s built her career on playing adorable French gamines.

La Coco was born in 1883 and died in 1971, giving costume designers carte blanche for 20th century fashion. Some of the outfits in the trailer seem straight out of the Keira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice, which famously and anachronistically traded its early nineteenth century setting for a late-nineteenth century aesthetic inspired by Marni. We’re not sure what Coco is channeling, but it sure looks good.

As for the story itself, it reminds us of this summer’s Julie and Julia, but, you know, without the wacky Amy Adams half.

Coco Before Chanel recieves a limited release on September 25th. What did you think of the trailer?
