Like your Flavorpill editors, Ari Up was a big fan of Patti Smith. But when the late Slits frontwoman got to meet her idol, at the tender age of 14, things didn’t exactly go as planned. There was no sisterly advice, no heart-to-heart about women in rock, no exchange of phone numbers or addresses. As Up tells it in an interview unearthed by Dangerous Minds, she turned up backstage at one of Smith’s shows “with my hair out to there, with my underwear over my pants, my torn-up sweaters, and my crazy Sex Vivienne Westwood shoes.” To put it mildly, the Godmother of Punk was not impressed.
