If you’re under 34 years old, then Matt Groening’s Life in Hell comic strip has been running for longer than you’ve been alive. But, as Poynter reports, The Simpsons creator has put an end to the angst-filled, bunny-populated project that debuted in 1978 and earned him his big break on The Tracey Ullman Show. The final edition of the syndicated strip came out last Friday, June 15th, a typically absurd and not at all sentimental nine panels featuring the fez-wearing gay couple Akbar and Jeff.
“I’ve had great fun, in a Sisyphean kind of way, but the time has come to let Binky and Sheba and Bongo and Akbar and Jeff take some time off,” Groening told Poynter, which reveals that Life in Hell now appears in less than 40 papers, compared with a high of 380 in the early ’90s.
