A Cher Musical Could Be Headed to Broadway

Even before she rose to fame with “I Got You Babe” in the ’60s, Cherilyn Sarkisian had a pretty interesting life. She spent some time in foster care (her mother, an aspiring actress, was having financial issues), and dropped out of high school at 16 after struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia. She dated Warren Beatty. She sang backup on a number of Phil Spector’s hit songs, including The Crystals’ “Da Doo Ron Ron” and The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby.” And of course, she met Sonny Bono, who was working for Spector at Gold Star Studios; the two instantly clicked, and the rest is pop culture history.

According to an announcement from the star via Twitter, producers are currently at work on a Broadway musical that’s based on her life story. “There r 3 Chers!” she tweeted. “1 b4 i met Son thru S&C yrs. 1 after i left thru Believe tour & 1 Now! They all 3 talk 2 each other &Sing 2gether! I’m help. 2 write cause i was there & know stories that no1 knows but me ! I hope it happens!”

So do we, especially if she ends up playing the modern-day Cher, which she hinted at on Twitter. Just think of the amazing, bejeweled costumes, and not to mention the opportunities to dredge up dirt on past relationships — there aren’t many people out there who have been romantically linked to Elvis Presley, Richie Sambora, and Tom Cruise. In the meantime, maybe the Goddess of Pop could look for someone to ghostwrite her Twitter feed in complete sentences. [via Playbill]
