Stylish Portraits of Pop-Culture Icons in Multiple Media

Ever have second thoughts about hanging that Back to the Future poster in your living room for fear of reverting back to your middle-school decor? Well, fear no more, because artist Allison Krumwiede’s pop-culture artwork offers an alternative to teenage poster-plastering. A recent graduate of the Art Center College of Design in California, Krumwiede uses movies, actors and musicians as her source of inspiration. But unlike a lot of artwork that focuses on celebrities, hers doesn’t appear cheesy or lionize its subjects. She depicts each celebrity, from Kurt and Courtney to Pee-wee Herman, with stunning accuracy, often sporting haunting expressions. Krumwiede (pronounced “Krum-Widdy”) grew up on comics, Disneyland, and everything ’80s and ’90s, and works in every medium, from painting to pen to thread. Check out more of her art — which we discovered via Beautiful/Decay — on her website and look into purchasing a print or T-shirt at her Etsy shop.
