‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Will Be an Unnessary Trilogy

Perhaps in times like these, we shouldn’t be surprised by the news that Sony Pictures is planning to make The Amazing Spider-Man into a trilogy. But we can’t help it. The film hasn’t even been in theaters a full week yet! As The Playlist reports, regardless of how unnecessary many movie critics find Marc Webb’s 3D reboot to be, it has connected with audiences (particularly those “too young” to remember the Tobey Maguire versions), taking in a record-breaking $35 million when it opened on Tuesday, and $59.3 million in its first two days.

Producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad explain that they see future installments as an opportunity to expand on the Spider-Man Universe, and include interesting characters who didn’t make it into this first film. “We didn’t even get yet to Robbie (Robertson) and J. Jonah Jameson,” Arad told SuperHeroHype. “We didn’t get to John Jameson, and we didn’t get yet to Mary Jane, so we are kind of peeling the onion and looking for what will be the most compelling and interesting relationships within the Spider-Man universe to continue and sometimes spin them off — that’s an opportunity.” What do you think of their plans for the franchise?
