While we don’t always meet sequel announcements with excitement, when we heard that David Cronenberg was working on a followup to his 2007 gangster flick Eastern Promises that would involve both the original films’ stars (Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel) and screenwriter (Steven Knight), we were more than willing to put aside our usual skepticism. Unfortunately, a new interview with the director over at The Playlist makes it sound like the project won’t be moving forward — at least not with the backing of Focus Features.
“We were supposed to start shooting Eastern Promises 2 in October,” he told the site. “[But] It’s done… If you don’t like it talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision.” Given that many of the plot details have already been sussed out, what do you wager the odds are that this project will find a new home at another studio? [via Slashfilm]
